I have just about decided I have to have one of these. The American looks great, but I am wondering if anyone has shot the American side by side with the classic European hogback stock. Any preferences? I was not very wild about the European stock until I bought a little CZ .22 with it, and found it wonderfully comfortable. But of course, there are no recoil issues there, and I am using iron sights.

I had mine to the range yesterday and cant say enough about this wonderful rifle, Sold my 602 ZKK in 375, bought the CZ 550 9.3x62 in the Medium and havent looked back. It consistently shoots sub MOA with just about anything I feed it, Weighs a lot less and is a whole lot handier for real world hunting. Im 5'9 and find the lenth of pull a little long but thats easily fixed.

Dave: Thanks for the post. In looking at the CZ 2006 catalog, it looks like they only make the 9.3 X 62 with the American configuration stock and no iron sights. Looks like the decision has been made for me.

I have a 550 American in 9.3x62 and a FS in 6.5x55 with the hogback stock. I think if you stay with the iron sites the hogback will be great. If you are going to scope it the hogback is a bit low and the American might be a better choice.

I have the Lux and have been shooting it for 6 years. I Love it. I had a 30-06 American and sold it. I didn't like the stock.
The European stock looks stange but it is great in the real world. I'm about to take it Elk hunbting in about 3 weeks. I decided to take it instead of the Tikka lite. The Tikka doesn't shoot as well any way except off the bench.

Couple of things about the 550 American in 9,3x62. The action comes with double lugs from the factory and the big thing is it comes with a Pacmeyer (sp) "decelerator" recoil pad (at least mine did earlier this year. You'll appreciate both things when you load up to the rifles potenital. BobG in VA

The rifle itself is great, the stock is clubby.

McMillan makes a wonderful replacement stock that is very comfortable.

I picked up my 9.3x62 CZ550 with an American stock. I liked both the "hogback" and the American stock.

The deciding point was that I liked the straight combed American stock, which is parallel with the barrel to reduce felt recoil. It's also a higher comb than the hogback style so you don't have to crane your neck up higher to look through a scope.

I just wish it came with a front sight, and a provision to mount a rear aperature sight as a back up to a scope.

I like the strength design of the American's action cross bolts, and the double recoil lug too. But to be honest, I can't remember if the "hogback" style stock has those features or not.

They are all nice rifles. Can't go wrong either way.

My 9,3x62 is an older one ... and it has two cross bolts.

I cannot compare the hogback and American stocks in the same caliber ... my .416 Rigby is a hogback and the 9,3x62 is an American.

The 9,3x62 is a very handy rifle with a very moderate recoil. Doesn't seem any worse than a 30-06. Would be nice to have the iron sights, but is not necessary for a rifle that really won't be used for DG.

My medium 9.3x62 with the lux style stock has 2 crossbolts. As previously mentioned when you start loading it to its potential you'll appreciate the decelerator.
