i just ordered a model 70 extreme weather in 300 wm. I want to get everyones opinion on what to do now. I need to buy a scope for it and am considering sending it to hill country rifles to have it accurized. Now I know the rule that you should spend as much on the optics as you do the rifle so my price range is $800 to $1000 what scope do you think that i should go with. I elk hunt and also hunt white tail in southwest Texas with many 300yd+ shot opportunities. Have fun with this request and let me know what you think. I'm absolutely certain that a lesser scope won't compromise your ability hunt elk and deer. I'd shoot the rifle and see what it's capability is before I sent it anywhere. Actually for whitetail, especially if I were looking for an excuse to spend money, I might buy a smaller bore. ________________________ "Every country has the government it deserves." - Joseph de Maistre

gtodd, for 300 yard work, I would drop about 400-600 on a Zeiss Conquest of my liking. For me I would probably put a Conquest 3x9x40, which can be bought for 399 or so and spend the rest on hunting or tweaking the rig. I agree with others who say shoot it first to see what it will do before you send it anywhere. If you reload, you will probably get pretty darn good accuracy out of it, I've seen several shoot factory ammo damn great just out of the box.

Ether a Leupold or Zeiss Conquest will do the job nicely.

Leupold 4.5x14x40. I have 4 or 5 of them on my rifles that have some range to them. Heed the point above...shoot the rifle with as many types of loads as you can before deciding to send it out for accuracy work. Often, once you find the right load, you'll find it as accurate as you need it.

A $300.00 Lueopold vx-ii in 3-9x40 is a very good scope, lifetime warranty even covers cosmetic damage

I think your best 3 choices you should go look at in person (everyones eyes are difeerent, I think leupolds are gray and fuzzy to MY eyes for example) Leupold vx-3 Zeiss conquest Nikon Monarch These 3 lines are all pretty much of equal value and performance, all have similar options as far as strengths, and all come in SS gloss or matte black. My personal choice would be either the zeiss 3-9x40 or 3.5-10x42. I have personally used the vx2 3-9, zeiss 3.5-10 and monarch 4-12. I like the light gathering od the monarch and conquest in the 3.5/4-10x42mm. Eveyone at my hunitng camp remarked how clear and bright the zeiss was. If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

i put a bushnell elite 6500 tatical 4.5-30X on my 300 ultra. its pricey but is the clearest scope i have ever used. and the 4.5-30x mag gives the best of both worlds.

If you want to go cheap, check out the Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 (mil-dot) .. less than $200 delivered. Actually impresses some Nightforce and US Optics owner/friends when they try it ~~~ Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13

Redfield Revolution 4-12X40mm A $220.00 true Leupold VX-II. I would firelap the factory barrel myself using the $50.00 Neco kit, get a gunsmith to re-crown it for another $50.00 and buy a box of Devcon 10110 and properly bed it: http://www.6mmbr.com/pillarbedding.html I would not spend $250.00-$350.00 for custom action blueprinting on a factory barrel without firelapping it first. There is a much greater chance the bore is rough vs. the action machining poor.

I just bought the same rifle in 30-06. I'm thinking VX II, or III in 2-7x32,33. I'm trying to keep it as an all purpose rifle.

+1 for the Bushnell 6500 or 4200, Leu vx3 4.5-14 or Nikon Monarch. I like them all for "mid priced" scopes.

No doubt about what I would scope the rifle with. A 4.5 X 14 Ziess Conquest with AO. I have a truck load of scopes, but my last six have been the Ziess. Good shooting. phurley

My suggestion - Leupold VX3 2.5-8X B&C reticule - adequate to 450 yards with the B&C reticule. I would first try the rifle as it is with the new scope and a few choice hand loads. How well does it shoot with Nosler Accubons or Partitions or Barnes TSX etc. ? I would onle consider accurising etc if there is any real issue with the performance of the rifle. Good luck and happy hunting. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."
