What kind of groups are you guys getting with the 338 Ultra Mag? Bullet weight? Twist? Barrel length?

I have a custom 300 Ultra on a Rem 700 Action
28" 1 in 10" twist Hart barrel
H-S Precision Stock and Jewell trigger @ 1 Lb.

180Gr. Partitions will average around .25"-.3" @100 yds. and will hold 1/2 MOA out to 500 yards.

Working on a load with Sierra Matchkings as we speak.

I know you were asking about 338 Ultra but I have found the Ultra family of cartridges to be fairly accurate all around. I am currently having a 375 Ultra built as we speak. Good Luck.

D-for what it is worth, I am not a user of the RUM but I do have a boat load of time in with a 340.

Here is what I can tell you.

The big 33's are and should be extremely accurate.

Use a 10 twist

I would go with a 4.5 weight Schneider and cut it to 25"

Most bullets from the 180's to the 300' will shoot incredibly well. As in all there will be some better and some worse.

But for the most part I've found the big 33's to be very easy to make perk.

225gr Accubond with retumbo will group withing an inch consistantly, some much better. It is a browning Abolt with 26 3/4, 1-10 twist. Getting 3140fps with the 225gr accubond.

Hey Doug, I've handled, shot and have seen shot maybe a dozen of them. With the Brake, they are very comfortable to shoot but loud enough to wake the dead.

One memorable 338RUM was brought to the Range by a guy who had just bought it and a couple of boxes of Factory Ammo. His buddy had a shoulder problem but was trying to sight-in a light weight 243Win with Factory ammo.

The hurt guy has the other guy sight in the 243Win. Didn't need a thing.

So he cleans the Shipping Grease out of the RUM barrel and sends a 5-shot string(loaded one at a time) to the Target. We all stop and go down to check groups.

As we are going down Range I ask if he normally shoots all his rifles that "fast" and he said, "It won't hurt them!" So I go on over to my groups.

In a minute I hear them discussing the fine group and see them messing with a Quarter. Those 5-shots were mostly covered by a quarter.

Obviously the barrel won't last him long, but the thing of interest to me was he mentioned it felt like it had less recoil than the 243Win.

So, the hurt buddy fired both from his non-hurt shoulder and agreed. I'm still a bit skeptical about that claim, but the Brake apparently impressed them as much with the Reduced Recoil as it did me with the NOISE!

I have both a 300 and 338 R.U.M. both are 700 Rem. SS/SYN with stock 26" barrels. The tupperware stock is not a real good platform to work from . I tried floating the barrel's but found both shoot more consitantly with a bit of pressure on the barrel. The 338 will run from 1 to 1 1/2" at 100 yards and 2 - 3 1/2 " at 250 with most any load . I've been playing with 225 Accubonds and Retumbo for a while now they are running just over 1 inch for 3 shots. I shot only 2 , 3 shot groups with 250 Partions and Retumbo group 1 was about 1 3/8" @ 3070 fps. That seemed a bit quick . So I backed the charge down 1/2 gr. and group 2 was just over 1 " @ 3005 fps. My favorite is a max charge of H1000 and 210 Partions. They run about 1 1/4 " @ 3170 fps.I only shoot 3 shots at a time and this is accuracy I'm willing to accept .The 300 about the third time out I hit on a load of Retumbo and 180 Partions that shoots really well I shot groups as small as 1/2" but mostly it runs right at 1 inch.I've been playing with 180 Accubonds tried about 3 loads all the groups are running about 1 1/2 so I probalbly won't pursue them much longer. When I was working up starting loads I had 1 load with 180 horn that shot 1 ragged hole.I never did go back to see if that was a fluke or not . Not bad for a rifle that was bought cheap because it had a " Accuracy problem " Good Luck KH.

dhumbarger,

I have a M700 LSS in 338 RUM.The rifle is stock but I did adjust the trigger and added a Pachmyer Decelerator pad. Scope is a Leupold VXIII 2.5x8.
This rifle is extreamly accurate!
I have developed loads using Nosler bullets,
200 gr BT, 210 gr PT, 225 gr PT, and 250 gr PT that shoot uunder .5 MOA. Best group with the 225 gr AB is .587".

Regards,

Well, I recently sold my .338 RUM. However with 250 TBBCs out of a 26-inch barrel I was getting shocking accuracy...I'm talking all shots touching at 100 yds. It was a great gun; I just had no need for it anymore.

With 225 Barnes X my Remington 700 SS(in left hand) will group 5/8" or better at 100. I just had a trigger job done on it to help the groups a little. Recoil is a sharp slap, not a push like my 375 H&H. I put a Limbsaver recoil pad on it and am thinking of weighting it just a bit to "slow" down the recoil. I'm using Alliant RL-25 at 91 or 92 grains per the Barnes Manual. I took all my animals in Namibia with it this last summer. The case needs to be full though, my rifle does not do well with reduced loads (Accurate 5744 for instance) . I haven't tried pillow stuffing in it yet to take up the space. I've had several guys shoot it once and hand it back to me, not wishing to punish themselves anymore. For a medium bore it shoots very flat, I'm running about 2,985 fps with the 225 gr X. With a little weight in the butt of the rifle mine will balance a little better, the 26 inch barrel doesn't get the balance point where I want it for my particular rifle.
