Just got the chance at a couple of mdl 70 rifles in an estate liquidation. One is a 06 #366,000 and one is a 270 # 71,000. How far does pre 64 serial #'s go? I'm thinking around 550,000. also if these rifles are in good condition what should I have to give for them? Is there a model 70 book or download listing date of manufacture and serial number?

The '06 would be a 1956, the 270 somewhere between 1945 and 1947 according to my little Maddis book.. someone will be sure to correct me.. Les

http://rogerrule.com/RogerRule.com/Books.html This is one of the better books, though there are others.

A mid postwar (steel buttplate) '06 standard grade rifle, unaltered, is worth anything from $300 for parts to almost $2000 for a pristine supergrade. Then there are the non-original guns and the altered, relbued, restocked, added pad, etc., guns. Most of these turn collectors off and, priced appropriately, make good shooters. You just don't want to pay collector money for them.

So value greatly depends on condition and originality.

The 70k .270 should be a transition model (prewar cloverleaf tang, transition safety) and worth more on that basis and b/c of the less common .270 chambering. In nice, original shape could easily go $1500 plus.

Many variables, pics would help. Sam
