I have (2) Whelens. One is a bone stock rem 7600 that has accounted for PILES of game.

The other is this custom left hand mauser by Gary Stiles. I bought the stock blany from Ray Atkinson here at AR. VERY nice wood.

Now boys, don’t forget the best part of this deal-- The .35 caliber was designed for hunting rifles and all of the rest of the calibers were just made for guns. CP.

Is Remington the only manufacturer today that offers a 35 Whelen? I saw a 700 CDL Model, but it appears the other manufacturers don't offer one. Or have I missed it?

I ask this because after seeing this thread and doing research online? I am convinced! I had been looking at some of the European 9.3 calibers, but think my next rifle will be the 35 Whelen.

I saw that gun some time ago. At 9 1/2# unscoped it will likely be for sale for some time.

Ray and all? Ya convinced me!! I had planned on purchasing one of the Rem 700CDL's in the future, but not right away....however I had an opportunity that I just couldn't pass up.

My local gunsmith has available a Mauser based action that is currently barreled in .270WIN. Since I already have that caliber and is based off the 30-06, the same as the 35 Whelen, I did't think I could go wrong. It needs a stock and my gunsmith has a bare coffee colored bare laminate stock that already inletted for the Mauser actions, so all I needed was the barrel. I watched him order a Shilen #5 CM 26" 1 in 14 twist .35 cal barrel for me this morning. He has the 35 Whelen reamers....and while I dunno how long it will take to build for me it will be ready long before hunting season. He even I could lend a hand here and there to cut costs and make the project a more personal adventure. No, it's not going to be in the grade of some of the artisans on this forum, nor will it be up to par with some of those rifles that have pix posted of them, but a very sturdy, basic rifle and it will be my own

"Shake n Bake and I helped." LOL! Thanks to all who gave me the idea for my next rifle. Somehow I think this will be my last for a long time to come. Getting up there and I need to start planning for my ultimate retirement. So many things to do and so little time. Plus I need to take that once in a lifetime hunt to CO, MT, or WY or ID.

Thanks everyone..

Yes my Mod. 70 was a 30-06. Still doing load work up, but RL 15 and 225gr TSX & 250gr Speer Hot Cores shoot very well so far. BTW, where in BC are you located. I shot the Moose in the Pic a little bit south of Vanderhoof, BC in 2002. You say the wheels are turning, what do you have planned. Karry

KLM300....I have the same rifle in 30-06...I have been thinking it would get more use if it was either rebored or rebarrled to a 35 Whelen...I would prefer reboring... Just recieved my first 35 Whelen in a Ruger K1A (#1 stainless/walnut) about a month ago...what a beauty...I don't have a digtail camera or I would post a picture....I want to use the #1 with open sights and have a SS bolt rifle with a scope..
If you haven't been back to Vanderhoof since 2002 you wouldn't believe what it looks like now as the mountain pine beetle have killed off 99% of the mature pine...I have no doubt logged in the area (Sinket, Bobtail,Kluskus,Blackwater, and Kenny Dam Road) you hunted in as I live about a 15 min. drive down river from Vanderhoof...

I'm embarassed to even post a picture of my box-stock CDL, even though it's a nice one (the kind folks at Grice let pick through several).

Ray- How is it going with the Whelen? Have you worked anymore with the 250 grain Grandslam bullets. I'm looking for a good bullet to run in my Whelen but never could get Speer bullets to give me the accuracy. What others have you tried? I would like to find a good 250 grain bullet to run in mine and then stock up on them. Good luck to you.

I have been a hard core Northfork fan until recently. I've bought some A-frames to try in my Lott but haven't mede the transition to the A-frames in my Whelen. I'll give them a try. Thanks for your advise. I have about 100 ea. of the old 250 grain Silvertips for my 358 Win. but want to keep them for that rifle and need something for the Whelen. Just wish they were a little less expensive. Wink

Pegleg, yes I have, I ended up settling on 58.5 grs of re-15. I believe the velocity was 2574 average for those. I posted the results on the other thread about those. It should be a thumper on most anything.

I am of the opinion now that new (novice) hunters should take this round hunting say in lieu of lesser calibers first and not the other way around.

Why?

They are game stoppers. No trailing. No lost game. And good clean kills is a hook with hunters. Properly fitted rifles with this round need not haved flinch causing recoil. I fell the same way about the 9.2 x63. This latter round and the Whelen should be chambered in entry level rifles fro the NA market. My 2Cents.

Mr. Atkinson,

Sorry to hear about the upcoming eye surgeries; I'll pray they go well.

For what it's worth, I had two eye surgeries performed on the same eye about nine years ago and I'm doing fine. But, I no longer head soccer balls and I look rather askance at big bores and light weight rifles...for me, at least. Others may feel differently, of course.

I sure like the .35 Whelen's shown on this thread, though. What was said of one particular rifle applies to most of them on this thread: me likey.

I hope all goes well.

I`m getting in a little late.
Here`s the twins.
Top one is a M77RS
The bottom one is a M77RBZ with a fluted Douglas barrel.
Both rifles shoot the Federal Trophy Bonded loads well.

A lesson in irony

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us... "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Thus ends today's lesson in irony.

Went to a local gunshow a couple of months back. I usually go to look around, talk to a couple of vendors and shoot the breeze. I almost never see anything that I can’t live without. In fact I was so sure I wouldn’t buy anything that I didn’t take any thing to trade, cash or credit card.
I had been there about 45 minutes when I dropped by a new vendors booth. He had a manlicher stocked mauser 98 in 35 whelen. It was smithed by a local gunsmith by the name of Wayne Barnett, a fellow who was pretty popular in the 70’s and 80’ here in the Houston Texas area. It had an absolutely beautiful piece of wood, jeweled bolt w/ butterknife handle, double set trigger and a reasonable price. I couldn’t resist. Pix follow.
