Whats the recoil like on a .300 Win Mag?
Is it bad like a mule, or not that bad at all.
I am 6'2 and wiegh 215.
Would you rate it like a shotgun slug, or more like just a little harder than the 30'06.
I want to put a barrel on my Encore, and would be shooting 180gr Nosler Partitions out of it..
Thanks in advance,
W.

Consider the 300 Win mag as 1 1/2 30-06's, because that's about what the recoil will feel like. Make no mistake, it kicks, but good glass with the proper eye relief will negate any potential eyebrow cuts. That's the price to be paid for the extra performance, but anyone who can handle a 270 or 30-06, can handle the 300 with a little practice.

In between a 12 gauge goose load and a full 30/06 load is about right . Felt and perceived recoil are difficult to describe to someone else .
On a TC I see no reason not to have a barrel in that caliber .

I can't tell the difference between a .300 Magnum and a .30-06 in the field.....but at a bench I use a special pad between me and the gun....It's not fun at the bench but won't be the worst thing you ever shot either.....

1 1/2 times the .30-06 isn't too far off!

You will have no trouble with it. My daughter - 5' 8" at 150lbs - shoots one as well without issue.

.300 Win Mag is my favorite of all the calibers for African Plainsgame, the kick is about the same as 30-06, only more flatter shooting, shot everything from a Big Zebra to a Springbok Ram. The key is breathing and trigger control and don't anticipate a kick. I could shoot the .300 all day, unlike some bigger bores.

Personally the 300 kicks a LOT more than an 06.
However it all depends upon your ability to handle recoil and since you are asking the question I would imagine it is an issue.

Your encore is going to weigh what? 7.5 pounds?? that thing is going to kick like hell.
A really good ercoil pad like a limbsaver or a decelerator will help a bunch, and the TC has a great shape to its stock, but it is still going to whack you.
Not that it is a problem,, just make sure that whenever you are sighting in or practicing you take precautions against it, shoulder pad, etc..
And then when it comes time to shoot at a game animal you won't even feel it.

So mute point..

I agree with Dr.K, about inbetween an 06 and a good heavy 12ga load to me.

My tikka t3 in 300WM is not bad, but it will get your attention after a few shots from the bench.

I do a good bit of turkey load patterning from a bench. The 300WM is much more friendly Smiler

it depends on the brand of rifle. the ruger 300 winmag I had kicked less than the Savage 30-06 I had previously, but in general in the same rifle it will kick a little harder, but not too much. the 300 recoil is in between the 338 win mag and the 30-06

Woodsie,
It's all in the head! I were always shy of shooting larger calibres & would always prefer to use a 223 over anything 30 cal. On the spur of the moment and having read too many safari books I purchased a 375HH. At that stage a 308 was the biggest I'd used. At first my shot's couldn't stay on an a4 at 50yds. Once I realised that it would not break me with practise all of a sudden I'm shooting 1" groups. I also now have a 300 win mag...it's a bit stout of a bench but as long as I keep telling myself it aaint gona break me I can turn out sub 1" 100yd groups...when I let my concentration lapse all of a sudden I'm shooting 4" ones.
Its all in the head!

If you can shoot and more importantly do shoot a .30-06 regularly, a Winchester Magnum won't be too much worse in the same gun.

Keep the butt stock snug, keep yourself stable, give enough eye relief, and a good rest and you'll have no problems with the .300 on the bench or in the field. If it's too sharp of a bench, you can deaden it with some thick felt, scrap carpet, or a PAST vest/pad.

I'm in the process of ordering a new Monarch for my new .300 WM and can't wait to shoot it off the bench, as soon as I get it and the Dednutz mount there should be some good times with a great round.

I shoot the 300wsm 180 gr ab's. In the field I don't really notice much difference. At the bench, there is a little less than 1.5 times the recoil. The recoil pad on your rifle makes a huge difference too. as well as the weight of the rifle and the amount of cloths you have on. I hunt in MN, so I have a pretty thick coat on during hunting, but the recoil is noticeable in July when just target shooting Wink

For the last few months I have been using my 300 as my daily walking rifle. I walk in a place where carrying and shooting a rifle is no problem. Some days I make 1 or 2 shots at rocks from rhe sitting or prone position. With this constant practice I find that my Decelerator equipted Remingtom no problem at all. However make no mistake the 300 does kick much more than the 30/06.

Depends totally on YOUR recoil tolerance, but if your worried about it already then the 06 would be a better bet...

I suggest you try one before you buy one...

I shoot a 300 in a moderately heave bolt gun. I am 5-8 and 180. I actually dislike my little Marlin 336 in 30-30 more when it's shooting the Leverevolution ammo. For some reason the geometry of that little gun and my body makes it unpleasant out of all proportion.

The combination of muzzle blast and actual recoil are what you need to deal with. It doesn't matter one iota to you if you just don't like shooting the gun.

+1 on try before you buy advice. I can well imagine that the TC might be a really unpleasant little bitch to shoot.

Have a good muzzle brake put on it and don't worry about the recoil. there won't be enough left to worry about.

I have a 300wm in a Savage 114 Classic series and to me the recoil is very managable. I also have a Rem. 700 in 300saum and the recoil is about the same in strength but they are different types of recoil. You will not have any trouble with the recoil unless like mentioned that you are recoil sensitive. It is a heck of a lot less than my 870 Super Mag shooting 2oz loads of 3.5" magnums.
