The definition of point blank range I use is the distance at which the path of the bullet will be with +/- 3†of the line of sight from muzzle to the point blank range.

Can someone give me the approximate point blank ranges of each of the following loads:

286gr 9.3x74R

225gr .338 Win Mag

250gr .338 Win Mag

196gr 8x57IRS

196gr 8x75RS

I am guessing that the 9.3x74R and 8x57IRS are about 175 to 200 yards and the .338 Win Mag and 8x75RS are about 250 to 275 yards, but would appreciate accurate information.

I cannot tell you what it would be with .338 or 8mm, but the 9.3x74 286gr with velocity 2300fps would be 225yds with a spitzer and 200yds with a round nose. This assumes about +/-2.5" or a 5"circle.

Looking at data for my 8mm-06, I'd say your estimate for the 8x57 is a good one.

Assuming a BC of about .500 for the 250gr .338, you would be within a 5" circle out to 275yds. I think the 225 grain would be slightly less because of lower BC.

I am totally unfamiliar with the 8x75RS; however, if you can get mag performance out of it, it should duplicate or come close to duplicating the .338 performance. Kudude

Thanks guys,

Action type aside, I think the .338 Win Mag is the best balanced “do everything†cartridge for North American conditions. From Alaskan browns in thick cover to antelope or mule deer at long range. I just wish there was a popular, readily available rimmed version of it for drillings, doubles and traditional single shots.

I would agree that for double rifles the 9.3x74R is just as good. Because even the best doubles practically never have regulation that a sportsman would rely on for a right/left group on game beyond the point blank range of the 9.3x74R.

I would like a round with the all the capabilities of the .338 for drillings like Krieghoffs with independent non-soldered rifle barrels. I think the 8x75RS would do it, but realistically from a commercial factory ammo point of view it almost doesn’t exist. It’s almost like the old 5mm Remington Rimfire Mag – you can find rifles, but not ammo.
