Are the actions found on the current Model 70 Winchester Magnum Super Grades long enough to handle rebarreling to 300 H&H? I have an itch for a 300 H&H and like the stocks on the Super Grades. bewildered

depends on the action length. You will need a 375 length action. 458, 300 WM etc. are not really long enuf

Chuck, you're quite right that the "action lengths" are the same.

As you also know, the ejection port, bolt stop, fixed ejector, magazine and follower are different for the 7STW, 300 Wby, 300 RUM, 375H&H, 416 RM sized cartridges... if I were making up a 300 H&H I'd only do it on an M70 action chambered in one of the above... it'll save a lot of expensive alteration's required on a "standard" LA (30-06/300 WM) M70!

You will have to substitute the follower, and mag box..maybe open the bolt face, if its a smaller caliber, then cut the rt. side of the action back a tad and cut a groove notch in the back of the front ring. Perhaps some rail work and feed ramp work..About $100 worth of work not counting your barrel or rechamber whichever the case may be...

My pre 64 was originally a 30-06, after I shot the 06 barrel out, I had Dennis Olson make it a 300 H&H, that was many moons past, it has had maybe 3000 rounds through it and a ton of game shot with it and its still cooking, never missed a feed or ejection in all those rounds...

I had a 7mm stw rebarreled to 300H&H. It takes less work if you go that route.

I would go find a pre-'64 .300 H&H, and have that rifle re-stocked to suit you.

Thoses .300 and .375 H&H rifles received as much care from the factory types as you might find in a Custom SHop gun of today, and I have read that all those barrels were cut-rifled.
