Was wondering if someone can help me out, I've been looking at this H&R 301 Carbine in .300 Win Mag for a while. I like the full Mannlicher style stock and the short 18" bbl. I realize that the short barrel will cut down the FPS quite a bit compared to a 24" but it looks like it would be a quick handling rifle. I think the guy is a little over priced on the rifle he wants almost $700 for the rifle with an older Weaver scope.
I've booked this rifle and while it is just an estimated value of the rifle is only around $440 if it is 100%. I asked the guy selling through e-mail if he would entertain any lower offers and got this reply

I understand, what some books say and what is in the real world are 2 different things. Some guns sell for more than what books say.H&R are not known for high quialty guns but this one is and made with the same action as a Browning Hi Power or Safari grade.Thankyou for your intrest
I don't know much about the H&R bolt action rifles and was hoping someone out there could educate me.
Hello, I have seen the H&R rifles using a Mauser action, but have been told that the action is really a Zastava and not the FN as used by Browning in their older model bolt guns??? Recently a friend had one of his many Mausers at a gun show and had H&R's there and upon inquiry this is what he told me. Others may verify this one way or the other. Mind you, does not make it a bad gun, but do not believe it is an FN action. Good Luck.
The 301 was built on 3 actions, FN, MKX, & Sako. The FN is marked FN, the MKX is either marked Harrington & Richards or nothing, the sako for a long action L61r "made in Finland".I collect 300's & my hunting partner 301's. I think the price being asked is about $200 high for a Sako or FN & $250 for a mkx. Shooting a 300 winmag in twilight will probably be a religious experience.

The pictures that I've seen the action says "FN Action made in Belgium. I think it is a nice rifle but I definatly don't want to over pay for one. H&R bolt actions are not common where I live, and I've been wanting a Mannlicher stocked rifle for awhile now. I just thought this might make a good high country Elk rifle.
I think a 301 on an FN could reasonbly be worth more than $500, depending on its condition. If the scope mounts are nice ones and the old Weaver is in good shape, that adds a few bucks to the value. A reasonable price if everything is 98% or better might be $600, especially if it's what you want. After all, even a Walmart special with a cheap Asian scope will push $500 these days, and the FN-H&R is obviously worth substantially more.

http://www.auctionarms.com/search/displayitem.cfm?itemn...e%20300%20Win.%20MagHere is where I found this H&R and unfortunately I cannot see this rifle in person. I really like the style of this rifle but I'll have to let it pass untill I can find another one in a caliber that I'm interested in. I don't have a problem spending money on good rifles but I just don't think this one is worth the $695 asking price when I've been the high bidder twice when this auction was a reserve type and the most I ever had to bid was $450 even though I had a proxy bid of $500 in.
When buying a FN action H&R, remember you will probably have to replace the trigger & the bottom metal is pot metal junk. On the good side they are accurate rifles & hold really well off hand

I had pretty much decided not to buy from him when he wouldn't entertain any haggle offers conducted through the site. This rifle has been on the site for over 4 months and I was hoping that he would sell for a lower price if I made an offer. I did check out the reviews on this seller and he had a few bad, sounds like he can be hard to deal with but overall he ranked above 90% on the site.
I largely agree with Tom, but might rate the package worth a little more. The scope is probably worth a solid $50, but the mounts are throw-aways. The gun's condition is not perfect, but if it's what you're looking for, then putting $550 into it would be reasonable. So, IF the seller were dependable and willing to negotiate, $600 on the package would be a comfortable price.
But from what you've found so far, all of that is academic. I've often wondered why sellers will keep guns listed for months on end when it is clear that they are priced above market. I think it diminshes the credibility of auction sites when this goes on.
