I just acquired a NIB 1987 Model 70 XTR Sporter in 300 H&H.
Normal Talley mounts don't work as the rear mount holes are fore and aft just like the front mounts. First guy at Talley had never heard of a 70 with holes like this. Second guy is sending me the correct mount. Now I am wondering just what I found?

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

Folks are just now discovering that the non-CRF post-64's, especially the XTR's, were good rifles. I thought it strange that Winchester has been shamed for years after the post-64 changes. Remington always made their rifles in a cheaper manner than Winchester-round receivers and the 5 cent recoil lug for example. Yet Remingtons were worshipped and Winchesters were scorned.
As far as your XTR 300 H&H, great find. I've seen a couple but I have a pre-64 Winchester and a Remington Classic in 300 H&H so never sprang for the XTR's.
It would be neat to find the number made. I can't hep but think it is low and you have a wonderful "sleeper" on your hands.

A lot of guys are under the impression that all Model 70's in full length H&H cased rounds have the .435" hole spacing on the rear bridge. Not true.

I had a push feed XTR WinLite in 300 Weatherby that had the same hole spacing on the rear as the front bridge. It also had the same ejection port length as the same rifle in 30-06.

I had one of these in the early 90's...great gun! Great find!

The Winchester M-70 hole spacing's are actually quite complex compared to most rifle makes/models.

Even the pre-'64 Winchester M70 CRF Magnum rifles had several different scope mount hole spacings...which is one reason the various boxes bases came in used to have right on the end of the box (& may still have)..."for rifles serial number XXX,XXX,XX and higher". or "for rifles below serial number YYY<YYY<YY".

A reference to a Redfield listing, or one from Buehler or Leupold will likely still have such differentiations.
