I have a Remington Model 700 in 30-06 (left-handed action) that doesn't shoot well. I've given up on this rifle. In spite of bedding, trigger job and persistently handloading to get MOA I think this rifle is incorrigible. As I considered re-barreling it occurred to me that I would prefer to have a .35 Whelen. What kind of expense should I anticipate with this action? Any recommendation on barrel manufacturers that produce a great product and are reasonable in making this change.

A rebarrel is all you need and there's plenty of barrel makers that would do well for you but I've been a Douglas fan for ever....I also use Shilen at times as well. One can spend more and not get more!

Aaalll right folks. Nothing to see here. Just another rebarrell string. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy dancing Move along, move along! Don't forget to ask Santa for a Pacnor. Probably around $500 total work involved depending upon who you do your Christmas shopping with.

Merry Christmas jumping

I had my Ruger Model 77 tang safety model in 35 Whelen re-barreled to 35 Whelen using a Shaw barrel.

That sound dumb a hell, but I am not a fanm of short barreled rifles. My ruger came from the factory with a 22 inch piece of stove pipe, that I just did not like. After working with the gun for 3 years I ran on to a guy that was willing to make the swap at a reaonable price, and he removed the piece of stove pipe and replaced it with a 26 inch Shaw barrel, and it has been one of my two "Go Too" rifle for 15 years or so now.

You might also consider reboring to 35 whelen. I had an .06 rebored to 338-06 for about $200 from J E S reboring in Washington or Oregon. He does a nice job and turn around under 2 weeks. Good luck, Daryl.

My Whelen is reborred as well. What ever you do, just make sure you get something other than aweful Remington standard twist on the Whelen.

BTW. I had a Rem 700 in 243 Win give me the same problem. Would not group inside 3 inches no matter what. I am solving that problem with a new Shilen barrel, a rebed job, and trueing the action and lapping the bolt lugs.

I had my Ruger M77 30-06 re-bored to 9.3x62 by Labontie (sp?). I like the fact that the rifle turned out very light. Not a lot of fun from the bench but a joy to carry at under 8 pounds with a compact scope. I don't shot gophers with it and it is a hammer on big game. OK, so you want a Whelen, consider a 9.3x62, what the 35 Whelen wants to be when it grows up.

You guys are great. After a couple pm's and your comments I think I have this figured out. What a lot of folks don't understand is that not all steel is the same. Tensile, carbon content and other significant details affect accuracy. Not to mention the quality of the cutting tools, the diligence of the employee doing the work, etc. I figure less than $500 to get his rifle re-barreled and I'm excited. It should be a fun project.

I did exactly what Crazyhorse did. Sent my 700 to Shaw, and had them put a 24" 12 twist barrel on and blued, etc. Very good job. shoots .75 or less with most any 250 grain cup and core, or better than that with 225 Ballistic Tips or Accubonds. All this for less than $400.00, including fitting. That said, this is the ONLY barrel I have been satisfied with that was done by ER Shaw.

Really one fantastic cartridge, and it has a great name attached to it.

I just put an el-cheapo Adams and bennet bbl on a M-98 action and called it a day.. The results were fabulous, it is one of my most accurate rifles and one of my favorite to shoot.. The Whelen rocks!!
