Ah, you mentioned nostalgia. Now we can forget Ray's curmugeonliness and get down to serious dreams. Start looking at all the local pawn shops for a 1-A in '06, rebarrel in the 62 mm case (you could even rebore and clean up the chamber, but that would take out a lot of metal and would be really light) and install whatever forend you prefer. If you went to the 74 mm case, then there'd be a lot of reworking of the extracter, etc. Too expensive for my cheap self. Stick with the 62.

Since the 62 or 74 are not offered by ruger, what would be the best thing to look for....never had one re-barrelled before. Should i start with any 1-H i can find or ? My intent is not to come up with a presentation grade work of art but rather something that can and will be used hard. As far as choice of caliber goes, i just prefer things with a bit of nostalgia to them..same reason i shoot a flintlock instead of an inline and why i use a recurve instead of a compound.

If you want a Ruger No.1, then just buy a 1-H in 375 H&H and load it down to 9.3 velocity...Save yourself a lot of money and have a better gun to boot..also much better resale value if you get tired of it....A 375 with a 270 gr. bullet or 300 gr. bullet at 2200 to 2300 would be very efficient and hardly have any recoil....but if you wanted more gas, then it would be there with the simply dump of a powder charge.

So if i wanted to go with a single shot and have it re-barreled to 9.3x74 what platform would everyone recommend starting with? Assuming that i would like to end up with a rifle weight of over 8.5# (without scope). Also what might the cost of re-chambering run? I love the looks of the Blaser singles but they are extremely light.

A handloaded 9.3x62 is far beyond any 9.3x74 in power and treads so close on the heels of a 9.3x64 thats is almost its equal..A 9.3x62 with a good handload and 26 inch tube is the equivelent of a 375 H&H for all practical purposes.

If I were to build a 9.3 on a Ruger No. 1 , I would go with the 9.3x62 or 64 as the Ruger does just fine without a rim..

The 9.3x74 is strictly a double rifle proposition, and a second rate Buffalo caliber at best IMO....but it will work if all goes right, which doesn't always happen.

It's apparent that when this thread was started no one contemplated that Ruger would chamber the #1 in 9.3x74R in 2007.
