Hi Folks,
We range tested my dads SIG SHR 970 .270 Winchester the other day and I was amazed at the consistent accuracy of the rifle.

Since I have been too lazy to load any .270s lately, we only tried factory loads. Six different flavors ranging from 130 grain Remington Core Lokts to 150 grain Hornadys averaged .880 for 3 shot groups and no group measured more than .978 inches.

Its a shame that SIG has discontinued this model.

Does anyone else have experience with the SHR 970 in other calibers?

Good Shooting,
HBB

OOPs,
A typo I meant that I am pretty sure they are not importing them to the USA as of the present time.

I just spoke to a customer service rep at SIGARMS in Exeter, New Hampshire who said that the SHR 970 has been discontinued. However, Barrels are still available direct from SIG @ 395.00 each.

That is a shame. That was going to be one of my next rifles. I wanted 280 and 30-06.

There are plenty of new, and almost new, rifles in Gunsamerica.

Hello to you all! I have owned a SHR970 in 25-06 for almost two years now and absolutely love it. I too have experienced the consistent accuracy of the rifle. I shoot either the Winchester 85gr Ballistic Silver Tips or the Hornady 117 gr Light Magnums in my rifle. Both group right under an inch at 100yds. I tried the Federal load with the 100 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, but couldn't get them to group under 2 inches.

I was looking to get my brother one of these rifles a year or so ago. During my search I found out that SIGARMS in New Hampshire was no longer importing these rifles. Well I contacted SIG in Eupore by email and talked to a wonderful gentlemen who explained what happened to the importation of these rifles. It all came down to cost. The rifles were originally being sold for under $500 US dollars. SIG in Europe was not happy with this price and wanted to raise the price. Well the price was raised and SIG in the US would no longer sell the rifles. The rifle is still being marketed heavily in Europe, and is selling pretty well over there. I know a couple German guys that have these rifles and they both love them. There is a SIG website, http://www.sigarms.ch that is run by the parent company, but it is "Under Construction" at this time. On the old site, they showed 4 different variations of the basic rifle. There was an Alpine version in Stainless Steel, a Deluxe Version with great wood, and the best of all the STR970 Match. A stainless long range version with a integral muzzle brake and a McMillan stock. Hopefully the website will be back online soon and you will be able to see all the different versions for yourselves.

I was looking into buying a barrel, bolt and magazine chambered in 300 Win Mag, but the price of all 3 pieces was more than I paid for my whole rifle when I bought it. Like Hillbillybear stated the price of a new barrel is $395. If I remember correctly a new mag costs $35.00, plus the new bolt is $200.00 or $250.00. So the price has gone way up. The rifles listed on Gunsamerica are a steal compared to the new prices that SIG is charging just for the extra pieces. One other thing. I checked on the price of a new Walnut stock directly from the factory in Europe. I think that was $200.00 by itself. These are great rifles, and I think that anyone that got one, or gets one at the old prices are getting the deal of a lifetime!

Sorry that this is such a long post.

I have a synthetic stocked SHR 970 that originally came with the .30-06 barrel. I immediately bought extra barrels for it in .25-06, 9.3X62, and 9.3X64 plus 2 extra mags. Luckily, I got them before the prices went out of sight.

larrys, since you you said you were maybe looking to get one of these rifles in 280 and 30-06 I may have found one for you. It is new at a gunstore here in Milford, PA. I held it this morning. It is the synthetic stock version and it is listed at $479.00. Here is the gunstore info if you are interested in giving them a call. The store name is "Sportsmen's Rendezvous" the phone number is (570) 296-6113.

This rifle's life is not over yet. We are hearing rumblings that the gun will be in the US again under the Mauser label. That little SIG rifle was one of the best kept secrets and poorly marketed gun I have seen for a while

Aleko, what's the prognosis for importation of the Mauser M03 by Sigarms?

What do you estimate that rifle will cost? (dealer prices, not MSRP).

Thanks.

We will be having a preview in Nov. They say Mauser will be "big" in 2004. I know they shelved their .22 project

Glad someone brought up the Mauser M03 in this thread. I was cruising the Mauser site last week and fell in love with that new rifle!!! I sent Mauser an email, but still have not gotten a response back. Must be too busy or something???

Aleko,
can you keep all of us updated with info on both the Mauser 03 and the SHR rifles.

I agree with you that the marketing of the SHR was absolutely terrible. One of the gun writers, Larry Weishunn<sp>, has one and seems to really enjoy it.

I think the reason it didn't catch on with hunters is because it was so inexpensive that it didn't turn anyone's head! Inexpensive these days means cheap to most people. Well the SHR970 is definitely not a cheap rifle.

I bought one on Auction arms from "Sandi". He currently has the synthetic models in 270, 280, and 7 mm Rem, and the wood stocked models in 7mag. Prices are $429 for the synthetic and $460 for the wood. If you are interested, search auction arms for Sigarms SRH. I know it should be shr, but the seller transposed the letters. Stoney

The Mauser may or may not be imported, it is a pricepoint conflict with Sauer. The barrel lock up looks alot like a Blaser barrel. We were hoping for a Mauser in the classic format in the $2000.00 price range for a Magnum working grade rifle.

25calnut, thanks for the info. I have been away for a while. Abilene TX in August, OK, I'm not the brightest in the world. It did get down to 97 the last day I was there.

Please tell Sigarms that's a dumb marketing strategy.

I would rather offer two different brands at similar price points. That way I capture customers loyal to one brand but not the other. I would only stop importation if it's cannibalizing Sauer sales. But denying another potential revenue stream without evidence of cannibalization is dumber than dumb.

I agree on the dumb marketing idea. SIG should offer the rifles they have and let us, the consumers, decide what rifles we like and want to purchase. Isn't that how a free market economy works?

I is my opinion that we should have all of the lines too. They really are working very hard to limit our choices. I have asked them several times to bring back the 970. I am a shooter first. I want lots of choices.
