I am looking for some advice on a 300 Weatherby Mark V that I have ( passed down by my father). It has the original wood stock, 24" thin barrel, andis in overall good condition,

1) Does anyone make a composite stock for this action? ( I have heard that you cannot use the American style Mark V composite, is this true?)

2) Is it worth it to install a lighter stock to save weight, this will be my mountain rifle?

3) Any other comments on this rifle would be appreciated,

thanks

I would not be 100% sure of it not fitting the stock for the US made Wby. The first US made Wbys or to be more correct, the 2nd US made Wbys Smiler in the earlier versions had a 2 piece floor plate and the front part where the front screw went was wide like a Model 70. But the current floorplates are more like in the Made in Japan rifles.

You might like to try your question on this site

http://www.weatherbycollectors.com/

which has a little forum and a couple of people that have lots of knowledge on Wby history and what fits what.

Another thing would be to ring Wby and give them the serial number of the rifle. Tye may offer a service whereby they will alter the Bell and Carson stocks they currently use to fit your German Wby. But it might be costly.

I think any weight saving you would make would be quite small and especially with any stock that is a copy of the Wby stock style. Wbys do tend to be heavy but it is because of the action weight.

Lastly, if you have not shot the rifle before or any other 300 Wby with 24 inch barrel, you might find that reducing its weight is not an attractive idea. Big Grin

Maxx:

Check out www.bellandcarlson.com Bell & Carlson make an excellent synthetic stock very similar to the original Weatherby design. The Medalist also has a full length aluminum bedding chassis that greatly enhances strength, rigidity and ultimately accuracy.

I have the classic Medalist stock with the aluminum bedding that I used on a custom .458WM Mauser project and could not be happier.

Good luck.
