Will a .284 Winchester, shooting 150 gr. Matchkings, work ok in a Remington 700 short action? Thanks, Lonnie

Yes, but if you want the max performance from the 284, you will have to either lengthen the short action's receiver opening (the mag well opening) a little, or use a long action. Of course if you use the long action, you may as well go with the 280. I have a 284 built on a 600 action, with the opening opened up enough to allow a 3.1 COL, and I can easily get 2950-3000 fps from my 150 gr loads. This is from a 23" Shilen barrel, which also shoots factory 150 gr Power Points at 2900 fps. - Dan

It'll work. I have one built on a Weatherby Ultra Light. With this action I can seat the bullets out farther, in fact, to get it to shoot like I want it to I have to! Bob257

Ideally one of the medium length mauser actions would be the ticket if you can find a nice one. I have a 1924 mauser in 6.5-284 win. just my $.02 worth. Jeff

Lonnie-this is just me-but I had a 700/shorty 284 Win-the tube is still virginal and it will not feed very good at all. Personally if it were me I'd go 7/08 or 7/08 AI and call it a day. I here of others who have had luck in making them feed-was not my such luck. I have dies and a 1.5 weight stainless Shilen if you still want to proceed with said project. It shot well with 140 Nozlers. e-mail me if you have a interest dogz@montana.net "GET TO THE HILL" Dogz

If feeding is percieved to be problematic, I'd go with the 7-08Ackley Improved. I have a Sako L579 chambered as such.I wanted a 284 but was advised not to do it on the Sako.My 23-1/2" PacNor does 3000 with 49 grs if IMR4350 and 3100 with 50 grs. of H414 pushing a 140 Ballistic Tip.With that said, I am taking delivery of a 700 in 243 soon and I'm thinking of reaming to a 6mm/284.Dan,how does your 284/600 feed?

Actually, not bad, but it took some tinkering. The second round in the magazine would either not be picked up at all, or if I cycled the bolt fast and hard, would stovepipe. A worked on the magazine follower (angle and position in the magazine box) on the advice of a 'smith I know, and after a little massaging it's probably 98% right now. Feeds factory ammo fine, not a bobble, but I have to be careful assembling handloads. If I exceed the COL of 3.05" I have feeding problems. Keep it to 3" or less, and no problems. I'm going to restock it this winter, so I'll see where I'm at after that. Actually, considering the joy of rebated rim feeding, I'm surprised some of these new short magnums do so well. - Dan

Now on a Remington 722 that was rechambered from a 257 Roberts to a 25-284 back in 1965 I have never once had a feeding or ejection problem - bullets seated out to the limit of the factory magazine - no other modifications made except rechambering. Had to replace the bolt with a 700 short action bolt sometime along the line but even headspace stayed O.K.

just my opinion but if i were building a 284 to shoot 150 matchkings i would build it on a standard action. they are cheaper and more plentiful. lots less headaches and you can chamber and seat the bullets out as far as you would like. at this point you could buy a 280 and have the same exact ballistics with no work whatsoever. if you want more then AI is on the order. at that point you can buy a 7mag[same action/weight] and load light or full pop to get the same effect. this is the conclusion i came to after 3 284 projects. i still love the cartridge dearly but cannot justify the added expense or frustration of doing on a 700 short. the difference in weight is 4 or 5 ounces i think. you could change your sling for $20 and achieve the same effect. anyway, one of the 284s i did was on a weatherby ultralight in 7-08. what a great platform if you have to have a 284. standard mag lenth[just remove the spacer and modify the bolt stop. rechamber and your set. 5.5# flyweight w/24" tube.... good luck on your project. sorry for the rambling... woofer
