My new 7x64 reamer and gauges arrived yesterday from PTG.
Just wanted a classic to go with my FN action, stock, 7mm barrel blank, etc.

lawndartYou will like that caliber. Grafs has 7x64Brenneke brass made by Speer (it is nickled) for less than $24.00 per fifty pieces.
They have Hornady ammo for $20.00 per box, and Prvi Partizan ammo for $18.00 per box.

jeffeossoi have been using the hornady ammo .. its the first commercial center rifle ammo i've bought/used in about 10 years .. works great, and cheaper than just buying brass

Too bad I can't have it shipped to Alaska, but there will be some waiting for me in Texas next January.
I think it's a very strange law that they won't take ammo by air cargo to Alaska, but I can bring back fifty pounds of it as checked baggage on a passenger flight. I've not had any problems yet, and never lost ammo as checked baggage, but I can just see those TSA goons with their reg books, and supervisors peering over their shoulders when the radar picks up on this dense block of ammo in my baggage, surrounded by hunting clothing to take up the extra space.
So I read that the 7x64 has been the miracle cartridge in Europe, since it was invented in 1917. I've been looking for a real miracle cartridge. I wonder why in Europe it's the 7x64, and in the US it's the 223?
Seems to me that the 7x64 is a great candidate for one cartridge for everything, except brown bears, in the US. Well OK, I concede that could be (truthfully) said about practically any cartridge between the
243 260 & 300 mag. (note the sincere exclusion of anything smaller than 243)
Anyway, I would like to read reports from others who use this cartridge.

LOL That was my thinking when I built my first 280 Rem 30+ years ago. Used it with 115 hollowpoint for varmint and 160s for elk. And everything inbetween. Now the safe if full of rifles but it was my 280PDK that went to Africa with me.

KabluewyThe S&B ammo shoots especially accurate in my 7x57, but not so accurate in my 8x57. It's a mystery - don't know why. Penty of poop though, none of this loaded down crap.

KB, you sure?? Normally, IATA rules state: max 11 lbs (5.0 kg) of live sporting ammo in checked luggage.
Good luck getting the ammo home.

Looking at the TSA sight I din't see a Lb limits. However most airlines have one. Like MHO said most have a 11# or 5 Kilo limit.

That's where it get's even stranger. Alaska Airlines allows 50 pounds of ammo, last time I checked - January 2010. It could have changed.
However, connecting flights, and "partner" airlines could be a problem. Dunno for sure - didn't research that. On my last flight back, it was safe, since it was Alaska Air all the way from Dallas.
Gotta love Alaska.
Also, I have friends flying up this summer for fishing. I haven't hit them up yet for bringing ammo with them.

As far as application probably fits right into the 270, 280, 308, 30 06 range (maybe better SD) and don't see why you would prefer it unless it was just something new to play with. The other popular 7mm class gun is the 7 x 65R which has a bit less MV and ME but its used mostly in break action guns.

I don't necessarily prefer it over anything else in the same class. Just want something different, and the 7x64 isn't an expiriment, since it's well proven. I have a nice FN action, and stock, and 7mm barrel to do something with, and don't really want to just sell it --- sooo.
Several years ago, I had a 7x65R barrel made for the Encore, and it is a sweet shooting barrel.

BNagelThe .280 Rem is our 7x64 (a few decades later).
My BDL in .280 and CZ 550 in 7x64 have basically duplicate loads in different brass.

PanchoI've mentioned this on other posts but I load my Brenneke with 280 data less 1%. Shoots great.

So, you see why Alaskans are allowed 50 lbs. Projectiles up to the size of dimes add up in a hurry in weight, compared to those 223 rounds used down south.
It takes a lot of ammo in 223 to add up to 11 pounds, and ya still ain't got much.
Last trip back to AK, I mailed most of my clothes and stuff to myself, and packed ammo in my checked bags. I'm probably listed somewhere in a database as someone to keep an eye on. I would wink, but I'm not jokeing.

Brass and bullets = no problem through the USPS. Ammo = problem, powder = problem, primers = problem.
So, for handloading, I order brass and bullets, and have to get primers and powder in Anchorage, and bring them back on the ferry, in my truck. Sometimes someone will make a group run on the ferry, and bring back a list of stuff for friends.
