I also use the RCBS dies with no problems...

I've always used Lapua brass because I just can't seem to wear it out..

The bullets I've used are Barnes 250X , Nolser 250 Ballistic tips and Speer 270..

I just aquired a FN mauser action with a 9.3 x 62 barrel Now the questions, first the action has no markings above the wood. only info is below the wood line and is FN made in Belgium and there are some numbers on the bottom of the recoil lug. Is this an action that was sold to the trade? It appears to be barreled in the mid 80,s by the date on the bottom of the barrel with some initials.
Second what to shoot from it. I have found some Norma 285 grain bullets (older ones in the original box @ 20$ per) and cannot find any factory ammo around here, so I will need some dies (anybody got a spare set to send a poor elk hunter )Third optics, I have an couple of choices 4x weaver, 2 1/2 redfield, or a receiver sight. Thanks in advance for any info

Do not buy RCBS dies. They are sized to use 30-06 brass. Get Redding dies.

Congratulations -- you have a classic action chambered for a classic cartridge. Many FN actions left Belgium as complete rifles sold to other firms, who marketed them as their house brand. Your rifle may have been one of those that was later stripped for the action. Either way, it's an FN Mauser, so you're in good shape there.

Lots of load data is available on the web. Start with Hodgdon's, or get the new Nosler book. I prefer the 286-gr. Partition, but the 270-gr. Speer was softer than I liked when I shot feral cattle with them. I used H4895, and at 2,350 fps Partitions kill like a lightning bolt.

Norma and Lapua ammo is expensive. Sellier & Bellot is OK, and there is a thread somewhere around here about a guy who used it in Africa with complete satisfaction. Graf & Sons should have Prvi Partizan ammo in September, but I don't know much about it. At $20/box, it's worth a try.

Any of the optics you mentioned would be fine; use the one you shoot best. Hope this helps, Okie John.

Check out the Sept. issue of Rifle magazine. Great article about 9.3's. You have a super caliber and one the gets critters on the ground without ruining your shoulder.
My 338. Win stays in the rack now and we now have two 9.3 x 62's in the family.
Use the 286 Nosler Partitions or the 250 Barnes X and never look back.
I have a 1.75 -6 x 32 on one rifle and a 2.5-8 on the second one.

Well shoot! I just ordered 9.3x62 RCBS dies on Tuesday (Aug 3) and I ordered the Graf's 9.3x62 brass. Something tells me that the RCBS dies aren't going to work well with the Graf's 9.3x62 brass. As I understand it, the 9.3x62 case has a slightly larger head diameter than the .30-06 case. Well, we'll see what happens. At least I'll know to be on the look out for a potential problem with sizing the brass.

Well,
I use them, also the neck size only, without troubles. I had problems with the shell holder, I searched one that fit at the best the head.

Use Lapua brass maybe not the cheapest, but very very good material.

Lapua 286 grs Mega bullet is one of the cheaper cartridges here in Europe. Very blunt bullet, but, boys, does it shoot!! From 3 shots, two are always touching!

S & B has a good rep for accuracy, will try this for the future for hunting.

Winchesters 286 grs Nosler Partition and RWS TUG 293 grs have the best retaining energy, keeps pace with best 338 loads ( not the hienergys though ).

Sako also loads 286 Noslers. Norma or Lapua load 250 grs Barnes X. For smaller game 232 to 262 ( H Mantel ) bullets are recommended, 286 are "hard".

Regardless what Ray A says, Im not gonna heavier than 286. Lots of density there already!

Have fun, Hermann

The only Norma bullets that I have used are the 232gr Vulkans at this stage I haven't used them on game but they shoot real well in my 9.3x62 they group well under 1" with the better groups hovering around 5/8" from what I understand these bullets are made to expand violently and transfer there energy to target quickly kind of like a medium game varmit bullet I guess

The normal bullet's work well I have used their 286 grain Alaska and 232 Vulkun's, as long as you don't hit realy have bone they work and expand very well, I once shot a realy large Eland Cow (236 KG Slaughterd wheight)behind the shouler we recoverd the bullet just infront of her back leg, it penetrated the full stomack, but if you hit heavy bone they tend to go to pieces

Have had no problems with RCBS dies and Graf brass.

Go with the 286 gr Nosler. Did great for me in Africa this year! Did not recover a single bullet on Impala, Warthog, Kudu, Blue Windebeast, or Zebra.

Wonderful caliber!
