Looks like a great gun and not overly priced and the ballistics are fantastic at close and long ranges! 10pds scoped,so it is still practical and seems like a good choice for a long range elk and golpher rig!

I have no idea how I missed this one SAFARIKID...

I have a 338-378 Accumark and use it as my elk rig... To say the least there isn't much it can't take down the world over with 5000 lbs of energy at the muzzle... It's long range capabilities are phenominal thumb... Mine shoots the factory 225 grain Barnes X bullets right at MOA... On the other hand my handloads, using the 225 grain Barnes TSX and MRX, are about 5/8 to 3/4 inch at 100... No complaints here about accuracy...

That said, there are those out there that have not had good luck with the 338-378 in the accuracy department but the Accumark seems to be pretty accurate with that cartridge in general... Again, if you handload you should be able to find an accurate load for it with no problem... Mine is 104.1 grains of IMR7828 using Fed 215M primers and the 225 grain Barnes bullets I mentioned earlier...

Give er a whirl if you're inclined... It's a riot to shoot... I'm thinking with your big bore experience that even without the muzzle brake it will be no problem for you to handle Cool... It's about 52 to 55 lbs of recoil without it so even off of the bench it's manageable...

Ken....

I have two 338-378 weatherby accumarks. They are awesome.I have shot caribou with it out to 450 yards .It wacks them like a train. My hunting buddy who was 11 at the time shot two with one shot with it at 450 yards. My guns both shoot 1/2" or less at 100 yards. My cousin who shoots better than me shot a .25 " group.I think its the best long range rifle under 10 pounds and under $5000.I only paid $1000 for each of mine.I always use the muzzle break with plugs and headmuffs.I think the only bad thing is keeping it clean.I have to clean mine every 60 shots or it shoots patterns.I have shot under 1" at 300 yards.I have a 6.5x20 nikon on one and a 5.5x16 nikon on the other.Itys fun to shoot. The brass last forever.I have reloaded it 17 times.I like 215 federal primers, reloader 25 powder and 250 gr Nosler partitions.I also shoot 300 gr match kings , 250 gr serria bt and 275 gr swift and kodiaks.Stay away from less than 250 gr they blow up and will wear out your barrel too fast.I use mine for everything in Alaska .Its a sheep, deer, grizzley, moose ,caribou kinda tundra gun.Its well worth the price of admition. It kicks like a 270 with the break on.

Obviously drg416 loves his - Cool! It's a real Thumper.

Someone (didn't want to make his aquaintance) shot one next to me on the range two weeks ago; with or w/o the Muzzle Brake anyone in/around/next/close-by/proximity will develop a relationship (Love/Hate) with the Shooter due to muzzle blast.....if anything else it's a really good area/leaf/debris clearance machine!

Gotta admit if the game perfomance is as impressive as the muzzle blast; you're gonna win every time!

Cheers,

.30-378 Accumark with Swarovski 6-24 x 50. Shoots about 1/2 MOA with handloads pretty consistantly. Mirage effect from hot barrel and high mag scope are an issue in warmer weather. Best combo available at the very reasonable price. Ditto on the Norma Weatherby brass. Very good stuff.

I was considering that one too,but like the 225-250s for the bigger buggers! They also seem to take over as the range really increases with flatter trajectories and more retained energy...{But,IF I had a 2 Bore,I could just hit anywhere close! Anxiously awaiting one as I have the name picked out for it!} Smiler

If I were doing another Weatherby I'd be going for a .378 from the Custom shop.

Keep your shorts on! The new cartridges and slugs are in process. I'm thinking about doing a 2-Bore Drilling just for you! A SxS smoothbore with a rifled barrel above!! You won't mind the weight will ya! Wink

I would like to find out how to clean the powder fouling easier. It kinda bonds to the barrel. The carbon from the powder is horrible to get out is the only thing I dont like.It is like a hudge varmit gun.Check out the balistics of a 300 serria match king. Its is the most awesome long range bullet.I have shot about 100 out of my gun but not sure about hunting with them. You have to shoot stuff way out with the bullet not close up .It will blow up at ragnes closer than 400 yards in the 338-378.Check out realguns.com.He is on here sometimes. If I ever do burn out my barrel I will put a 30 " barrel on it next time. That gives you about 200-250 fps faster. It will push the 300 gr 3000fps and the 250 gr 3300 fps and it is flatter than the 220 swift. On the tundra a long barrel is no problem its kinda a pain in the brush.I like my 338-378s glad I got them.I bought about 1500 pcs of brass which started as loaded 416 weatherby ammo.To deload 1400 rounds was a pain and neck it down twice was not fun.I ended up with about less than $1 in brass per piece.I bet I will never get it for that again.I think I paid $27 a box for loaded 416 weatherby Norma loads with 416 410 gr woodleigh bullets.I used the Norma mpr powder in a bunch of guns also.I used the 416 bullets in my 416 Rem mag.

Its the strongest brass I have ever seen.I hope I get to use mine on grizzley .The only time I didnt take it I took my 338 winchester and the bears were 400 yards.I would have shot one with my 338-378 but it was too far to shoot with my 338 win mag and it was almost dark and I didnt want to have a wounded bear at night. The 250 gr Nosler partition is the most accurate bullet in my gun.I think the Kreiger luted barrel is awesome only think to make it better would be the 30" barrel.I would like to find a shot out 30-378 and build a 30" gun.I think both of my guns were put together by SECO in Maine thats what they said when I bought them. They were also building military sniper rifles at the time.I am not sure where they are made now.

Mine has no problem here. I'm using IMR7828 which is a single base powder... That might be what the difference is here...
