Was in the local gunshop today when a fella brought in a kinda scarce rifle to sell on consignment...

It's a Winchester model 100 rifle (not carbine) in .284 Winchester...I'd say 98% or better condition.

I think they're gonna start out asking $699, but from what I overheard, I think a guy could buy it for $650 or maybe even a couple of bucks less.

Name of the shop is Buckhorn Gun Shop in Dixonville, Oregon. Phone is 1-541-672-0676. Shop owner's name is Dave Von Drasek and he has been in storefront business here locally for at least 25 years, probably more.

If it wasn't for the stacks of hospital bills I'm paying right now, would have bought it for myself.

Hope this is a legitimate post for here. If not, I'm sure someone will tell me. I have NO fiscal connection with the shop or the gunowner who put it on consignment (don't even know his name).

Hey AC, That does seem like a good deal on the M100 - if it feeds. Darn shame someone doesn't bother to make a nice "compact, easy to carry" semi-auto that handles the 308Win class cartridges.

I realize some of the AR clones offer 308Wins, but I'm not aware of any of them offering 284Win or 358Win.

I have 2 of these...a 284 (post-64) and a 308 (1st. year production, pre-64). Both are beautifully accurate shooters, contrary to some folks' opinions of this model. I rarely use either....but am loathe to dump them. Life's little dilemmas........

This gunsmith (at Buckhorn Gun Shop) hs been my friend for the past 16 years or so...so he tells me things about guns for sale on consignment there, if he knows their history.

He says this guy is bound to end up having "seller's remorse" because this particular M100 is known locally to be very accurate for a factory gun....and the guy selling it really isn't very aware of what to expect from current factory guns. (He's an older shooter who is NOT a "gun nut" but has been talked by one of his "buddies" into getting some new bolt action or other.) Like I said, if I could scrape up the dinero right now, I'd get it for myself.

the recall you refer to wwas actually a recall of the firing pin for the 100. if you send your name in to Winchester along with the serial number of the rifle, they will send you a firing pin and $25.oo to pay for a gunsmith to install it. i did this a few years ago. the response time from Winchester was pretty short.

Hey Conifer, Have you ever taken yours apart?

A buddy of mine in Raleigh got one from his Dad in 308Win. It has a bit of a feed issue, so we decided to take it apart and check it out.

At that time I happened to have one of the NRA Disassembly Manuals that covers a lot of rifles, that I gave to him. We looked through it and discovered that just removing the stock was tricky. If you do it wrong, it appears to be easy to crack the stock.

We had it all apart and were very glad we had the NRA Manual when we went to put it back together.

The Mechanical Engineer that designed that entwining-helix arrangement obviously had some great mental ability with spacial relationships.

The M100s sure do carry nice.
