I loaded 300gr Woodleigh softpoints for Africa, reasoning that if I came on something dangerous while hunting plains game I would be less vulnerable. I used one on a sable and it worked well, but did hit the spine.

The only sambar I've hit with one was quite small and I fear the bullet went straight through without opening up. I followed the blood trail until the light was gone and went back in the morning but it had rained overnight and the traces were gone.

I've only used the 250 NP in the US and Africa. Has worked great.

I also have used the 275 SAF in Africa. Great penetration.

Hi guys
I used Barnes 210 TTSX in Namibia on 2 Kudu,Gemsbok,Red Hartebeest,Zebra,Warthog,Impala everyone DRT recovered three, perfect expansion even on the Hartebeest at 325 yards which penitrated the whole length of the animal.I love them.

I don't underestimate the Woodleigh and have a box and a half sitting around in the US. My only hunting experience was three decades ago with the 300gn Barnes (original). We only used it for warthogs around water holes because in those days the 250NP shot flatter, not to mention the old Speer. With today's flat-shooting bullets I doubt if the Woodleighs are going to make it across the pond, good though they are.

Of course, if the 338 were my only hunting rifle (it's not, nor planned to be), then the Woodleighs at 2450fps might make a nice buffalo surprise, turning the 338 almost fully into a 375. The Woodleighs do seem to expand quite a bit, but the 338 has plenty of SD to push that wide mushroom very deep. (An SD of .375 is way way up there, even better than the 350gn .375" weldcore BC .356.)

PS: I just did a little calculation. Our 338s could probably push that 300 Woodleigh at 2475fps with R-17 or R-16. The bullet wouldn't cross the 2000fps barrier until about 300 yards and would still have over 2500 ft#. Yes, that is a buffalo load that could be used for most antelope distances out to 300 yards. Sighted-in 2.1" at 100yards it would drop -11.7" at 300. Definitely huntable. Wind-drift 10mph only 9.0". Recoil in our little 7.5# scoped Tikka would be 45 ft#, which would make it feel like a buffalo rifle, too. All to the good. tu2

On second or third thought, if thinking about a slower, heavy bullet in .338", I think that I would choose the 275gnSwift A-Frame. It's BC at .469 is better than the Woodleigh's .416, and its trajectory would be better if launched at 2575-2600fps. It is two-inches less drop at 300 yards, and 1" less drift. As an 'H-mantel construction' the 275 would qualify as a "guaranteed penetration bullet", though I really don't doubt the Woodleigh, either, at impacts under 2500fps. They would both hunt about the same in 98% of hunting situations. As my son always reminds me: "get a tag and a good hunting area, then we can worry about the best bullet."

I was hunting with the Van Heerdens in about 1990 or there abouts and shot a bull with a 300 gr. Woodleigh thru a hole in the bush because my 404 was iron sighted Barry told me to use the .338 with the scope and shoot thru that hole in the bush, it should be a heart or lung shot..It was, and the bull made it to about 100 yards..A day or two later I used a 300 gr./338 solid, that bull went 100 yards very sick, took off running at about 100 yards as we approached before presenting a shot, but the 404 soft rolled him a complete summersalt, got it all on film...Shot my largest bull elk behing the last rib as he ran at at an angle away from me at 100 yards, and the 300 gr. .338 Woodleigh soft came out behind its ear. that's a lot of penetration. I can't tell much differerence in the .338 and my .375, 375 has the cross section, .338 has the SD and BC, so its about a push is my opine. BTW I load my .338 and my 375 at 2500 FPS with 300 gr. bullets for both..I get better performance with most 300 gr. bullets in both calibers at 2400 to 2500 FPS
