Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

Wow is right!

"...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." Here is what Lothar Walther calls their "Bavarian Classic" contour. It looks like a contour found on many common guild guns and cigarette rifles:

One of our resident Rifle Surgeons recently told me that he has a proper 400 Whelen reamer and some .410" caliber barrels blanks on order. A lot of fun and flexibility. You Can shoot jacketed or cast .41" cal pistol bullets. There is no problem shooting 300 grain .411" Hornady's that are intended for the 405 win. If one is really feeling squirrelly, you can load .410" cal 400 grain pills up to deliver a real pounding on both ends. That Bavarian Classic is a pretty light contour though. Might have to just do one in 9.3x62 instead, or perhaps in addition to.

And for Medium bores, here is a 300 Weatherby FN deluxe that belonged to my dad. I've replaced the scope with an S&B 6x. Some hate Weatherbys but others think this is about the perfect elk rifle.

Thank you for sharing that, Ray. Beautiful rifle.....I have always lusted after an old Mauser (or a new copy like yours) with the side panels in the stock. Someone (you?) did a great job on it.

That scope must have some serious eye relief....

Matt, here is the Walther contour I gave my smith to use on my 9X57 bbl, but he talked me out of it. A friend measured the bbl dimensions on his original Mauser type B sporter, and they were almost exactly the same as this Walthar.

These are all pretty lean.

An 8x57.

A pair of Walther's, 7x57 and 8x57.

A Pete Grisel double square bridged small ring "Mauser" 280 Remington.

And a Swede based Wisner metaled 7x57.

My pencil barrel ain't pretty. Weatherby Ultralight in 30-06 with a 24" fluted #1/2 contour. It's supposed to be a #1 but looks too skinny Wink.

They are listed 5.75 lbs but thats a 22". Mine is just under 6 lbs. I haven't shot it yet and I do know some were a bit tough to tune.

I like that Southgate Weatherby Ray. It looks like it may be the perfect elk rifle... I have a 375 Wby Mag on one of those. Not a lightweight and I'll need to check but I think the bare rifle was under 8 lbs. Eother way it's pretty light for the calibre.

Some really beautiful work shown off in this thread. You gentlemen have done splendidly.

A bit off topic but it seems the market doesn't like fixed power scopes anymore. I buy those S&B 6x 2nd hand for like the equivalent of $400. Be they Klassik or German made. The newer Klassik is lighter. All are superb. I can't not buy them that cheap. Great optics. Crosshair maybe a little heavy for all round use.

How do the Husqvarnas and old German/English rifles carry a straight line through the magazine/bottom metal to the pencil thin fore-end? Are they just longer fore-ends? Seems like modern rifles, same cartridge capacity, have a deep belly for the magazine and then take a new line up to the end of a skinny fore-end.

The Danl Fraser is just exquisite. True art of gun making IMHO.
