Of my hunting rifles I have the following calibers but for some reason think a .270WSM fills some gap. Maybe a 500+ yard deer rifle with less recoil than my .300Mag.
Maybe because I have never had a .270 or because I feel the need to try a WSM. So what say you all. I have the following.

.223
.257AI
.308
30-06
.300 Win Mag.

I am thinking of turning one of my 30-06 rifles into a .338-06 someday.

Another caliber rifle I have the hots for is a 6.5x284.

However I can get a good deal on a Remington synthetic stocked rifle in .270WSM and that caliber has sparked my interest for some time.

Don, strange post, as I just picked up a 270 WSM today (Rifles Inc, Lex Webernick) and a 338-06 (Arnold Arms from Gatogordo here). I'm not a WSM fan in general...don't see the benefit of having calibers that are "almost' as powerful as their LA counterparts, but that come in a short action. Who cares. However, the ballistics of the 270 WSM are WAY ahead of the 270 Win, and makes it into a near-270 Wby. Being a Rifles Inc, it will easily shoot 1/2" with a few factory rounds, so that will be my new "go to" Deer rifle.

The 338-06 will serve where I used to use a 35 Whelen. The wide availability and assortment of 338-cal bullets will allow me to tailor loads to the intended purpose, and being an Arnold Arms, it will be a shooter once I get it dialed in.

Only 5 guns.
You have room for at least 25 more.

Donald Nelson--Why screw up your 30-06 having it converted? That 300 win mag isn't doing a thing the 30-06 isn't--except burning more powder, making more blast and recoil.

I have about 4 dozen guns I only mention calibers of the rifles I think of as hunting rifles.

Carpetman1 I have two rifles in 30-06 a Remington 760 and a Remington 700, and the .300 is doing things the 30-06 rifle is doing. It is putting 3 shots in 1/2 inch!

Starting to research that now. So far 130 grain bullets appear to be pretty popular for the 270 Win for deer size game. Guess the WSM is probably the same. Since this rifle will be used as my long range rig (out to 600 yards) I am thinking I want to look for good velocity but a bullet that will hold up if I get a shorter range shot.

Biscut,
I was looking at ballistic charts and am thinking the 140 grain Partitions or BT's might do well. Why have a magnum unless you use the extra steam to push a little heavier bullet right?

Man needs two rifles in each bullet diameter range. Five just isn't enough.
