My shot here in western SD have been from 15 to 450 yards for deer.

I can't count the number of times I have passed up shots because they are too far. I wouldn't even consider them passes, shooting wasn't even a thought. This is pretty open country and you can see along ways.

I would have to say that my average shot is probably 100-150 yards. Most of the fun for me is closing the distance and sneaking around.

This year I would have to say that my closest was around 50 (not counting archery) and my longest about 300 yards. All of these were deer. My elk was 248 yards.

The deer that I have shot mostly were between 50 and 100 yards. My first moose was about 200 yards away, second was at about 25 yards, and last seasons moose was about 20 feet. Would have even been closer if he hadn't seen me at the last second and veered to my right. I think he was hot on the tail of a cow and calf that had just about run me over about a minute earlier.

In the farm fringe country that I usually hunt, average range is usually about 75m. The longest shot I have ever taken on a game animal was about 240m or so, allowing for pacing, etc.

The longest shot I have ever seen (on a bad guy) was 1620m, lazered. Fantastic shot, I just wish the shooter had told me he was going to fire, the 338 Lapua has quite a muzzle blast!

Cheers, Dave.

all I have to say is congratulations to all of you who kill game regularly at 300 plus yds. In big game hunting situations; it is more difficult than it would appear to be. Nervous game that won't stand still. you know. I have only a small number of kills longer than 250 yds. But... I appreciate the difficulty in doing so. The game just doesn't stand there....at least not in my neck of the woods. Have to act fast and decisively. Plenty of game here in central oregon. just damn nervous at anything under 500 yds out in the open. sometimes way further.

Average 75 yards in light cover.
Average 150 yards in the plains.
Longest 348 paced yards on an Antelope. The guys I was hunting with had emptied their rifles at this running buck. I was sitting in the back of the truck with a 257 Roberts. They yelled shoot! I got out of the truck, took a wild assed guess and put one through the boiler room. They thought it was cool. I was ashamed of myself. Still am all these years later.
