My 300 Weatherby is an original Weatherby FN which I bought new at the South Gate Weatherby store when I was 16. Roy Weatherby sold it to me personally. It carries a 4 digit serial number and is marked Weatherby, South Gate California. I have taken game with it throughout the lower 48, Alaska, Canada and Africa. It has been restocked once.

Over the years I've used all kinds of bullets and brass, and RCBS dies. It shoots as well today as it did when it was new. It's recoil never bothered me.

I can't compare it to other 300's since I've never owned any other. But for me, this is and always will be my "go to" rifle.

I have a 300 Winchester and sometimes shoot it daily as I carry it on my afternoon walks. Most shots are taken from the prone position. My rifle has a Decelerator recoil pad. With the good pad, ear plugs and a tight sling the rifle is very comfortable to shoot. It just goes bang, jumps a little and that is it. 300s are great!!

Sadly this is not the case; the Weatherby is much sharper and takes a little getting used to. But after you put 40-50 rounds through your 458 Lott it won't seem like an issue Wink

Hi Tiger, I congratulated the birthday by Facebook. You're right, when I've fired about 458 rounds of Weatherby 300 Lott seem an air rifle.

Oscar.

If you buy the Vanguard take a good look at the Rifle Basics replacement trigger. It is alot better than the factory triggers.

God Bless, Louis

I will take into account the issue of release. Thank you. The theme of the barrel in Spain is further complicated by legal issues.

Oscar.

It is quite fortunate to be able to have a rifle like that, it is from my point of view of the history of the factory Weatherby. I hope that you continue to enjoy caliber rifle and for many years.

Oscar.

I tend to lump the 300 Wby and 375 H&H together. Both are somewhat exotic, different....but don't give up much in the way of practicality and neither are to overly large to be used for about any shooting any calibre from 270 and up would be used for.

I have a post-64 M70 XTR 300 wby and its a great rifle. I was getting under an inch with my reloads. I have never shot factory through it though.

I am picking up a 300 Wing Mag this week as its a killer deal and I'm trading a rifle I don't want/use as a straight trade. I'm gambling on the new Superformance ammo to shoot well it it, as that ammo is turning a 300 mag into a Weatherby (if using non-wby factory loads of course, such as hornady/federal£emington) without the cost and recoil. There are Superformance Wby loads coming soon too, but these just match Weatherby/Norma loads.

Also, my Wby only has a 24" barrel so honestly its not gaining enough over the Winny to make a difference, except more recoil. However, ill still keep the M70 as a back up rifle, I only paid 300$ for it so why not just keep it?

At a field weight of about 7.10lbs it was a bit "sharp" off the bench to say the least, the shoulder shield and a slip on helped but it still rocks ones world lol. All in all, it IS the original King of the 300's. The RUM and 30-378 make gains but at considerable cost in ammo/recoil/versatility.

What I always find funny when people bring up the Wby....is that currently, people scoff at new cartridges that just "equal" or fall short of old standards, even though it might be in a shorter or long action, what have you. The 300 Weatherby came out what, 10-15 years before the Win Mag...but did people get as worked up back then about an "answer that needed a question" as they do now?

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

I am determined and finally buy a Weatherby Vanguard in 300 Weatherby Magnum, also in Spain, the importer has an offer that gives the rifle mounts and the viewer (the stack but at least to launch the weapon).

Thanks to all,

Oscar.

I have an early German Mk V in 300 Wby, with a Hensoldt Diavari on top of it. One of my favorite rifles to hunt with. 200 gr Partitions at 3000 fps have worked for years. I also have a 300 RUM, 308 Norma Mag, and (at this point in time) four 300 Win Mags (not sure how that happened) and an old M17 sporter in 300 H&H. I prefer the Wby to all the rest though. - dan

Thanks,

There is nothing wrong with it. If I come across ole' Weatherby in excellent condition made on FN Mauser action I be sure to grab it.

A further consultation on this caliber and the rifle that shoots it. I have consulted Weatherby's website and noticed that the Weatherby Vanguard rifle has a twist rate for this cartridge of 1:10, and my question is, what bullet weight is more appropriate to pass such streak ?

Thanks,

Oscar.

1:10 is pretty much standard in the US for .30 cal bores. That twist will handle pretty much anything you'd want to shoot in a .300 Wby - e.g. 165 - 220 grs. What bullet weights your (future) rifle will actually prefer, only time and testing will tell.

Several years ago WalMart was closing out rifles at my local stor and I bought a Vangard for $289.00. It came with a terrific target and I couldn't resist. It shot patterns. I looked at the bedding and tupperware stock and looked around for a good synthetic stock. I got one form Brownells for a song (another closeout) and it shot 5 shots into .8" -2 days apart. I fired 3 shots on Sunday and then came back on Wed and fired 2 more. All went into the same group. That impressed me more than the ability to group well.
I changed the trigger too so I guess you could say if I had spent over $500 to begin with I'd have been done. Some time we have to do things incrementally.
I like the 300 Weatherby. I think it's the best of the Weatherby bunch(OK the 257 is pretty good). I use it occasionally but mostly I shoot a 30.06 or a 9.3x62.
