I have a dilemma and not sure what to do. I have a really nice .338 that I never use and think maybe I should sell the thing to ( of course ) buy other guns and stuff.
The gun in question is a Winchester Model 70 Super Grade with a BOSS. This is the nicest looking rifle I own, almost afraid to hunt with it. The gun is in perfect condition and is a real shooter, with Federal factory "classic" 225 grain shells it shoots sub-MOA all day and has turned in a 3 shot .264" group topped with a Leupold 3-9x50 VX-II. Like I said the gun is pretty so I end up leaving it home a lot. I have a 30/06 that I kill everything with ( Deer, Elk, Antelope, Sheep, Goats etc. ) and I have a 375 H&H for big bears, Moose and maybe Africa some day and the .338 just isn't fitting in with the scheme for me. All I've ever killed with it was a coyote.
What should a guy do?
I've never even shot reloads through it cuz it shoots factory so well why bother? I have dies, and the regular boss and the "CR" or eliminator that eliminates the muzzle brake. I adjusted the trigger to a nice hunting weight as well.
It would make someone a real nice gun if I decided to sell it.
For the life of me its not that I have a "want" to sell it but I have no need to keep it so maybe I should sell?

Well for me, if I don't use it I tend to want to sell it. The question is what to replace it with?

If I had a chance to sell a gun with a muzzle brake AND a 50mm scope on it, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Chances like that don't come along every day!

As a big fan of the 338WinMag, I can not imagine not having one. Not to mention, life is to short to hunt with an ugly gun...

Sell it, buy a Blaser R93 and consider yourself a lucky man...

Really Stonecreek I expected so much more than a casual rundown of my rifle and scope.

I too am not a muzzlebrake fan but I must concede this BOSS is more than a muzzlebrake, just so you know it is also an accurizing component, but I'm sure you already knew that before you shot your mouth off.

This seems to be the time to sell Winchesters, people are paying absolutely stupid prices for them. Try it on gunboker or AA and see what happens, if it's not a gun you really care for I think you're better off to get the most you can out of it, and then buy something you truly love.

My bigm interest would be it being a Super Grade... the Boss does work....

And I am not a fan of the 50 mm scopes....

But a rifle like that, I could happily load up some 200 or 225 grain Bullets with an MV of 2200 ot 2400 fps... with some SR 4759 or IMR 4198... and have a really nice looking, low recoiling 33 Winchester Nostalgia equivalent using spitzer bullets....

If it was mine, I'd keep her...

If you want it to go to a good home, I am on a tight budget this summer... but I could make it a happy home... real easy...trade maybe?

I can't imagine not having a .338. (I have two)
Keep the darn thing if its in perfect condition. Lots of the Boss guns have been torn down to make custom rifles by people that didn't like the boss. And they aren't making no more of them. Someday perhaps a winchester collector would like to buy it for his collection at a premium price, and especially so if its a Supergrade.

That thing is a piece of junk sell it to me before the bottom drops out of winchester.I have a stainless 338 win mag with a boss.I shot some 7/8" groups at 200 yards but my ruger 77 stainless actually beat it with 3/4" groups at 200 yards.I had alot of problems with my stainless Winchester such as it rusted before I hunted with it,the scope screws were drilled crooked and it had bad mag springs and a bad follower. It has killed three moose and some other stuff but I like the Rugers better.I do like the boss and I do love 338 winchesters.

I have no sympathy for the BOSS system because it looks fugly(functional but ugly). 50mm scope is fine.... each to his own.

The 338 pretty much covers the duties in North America, it can do what your 3006 and 375H&H does, and in one rifle Eeker

Perhaps you should rebarrel/trade the 3006 to something smaller 7mm, 270, 6,5, or 25 cal and get a 416 or 404 etc for Africa?

Cheers

Hello,
Well, since the rifle shoots well, and you are comfortable with it other than possibly beating it up on a hunt, the suggestion to re stock with a synthetic stock seems to make a lot of sense. Kind of like the old story of eating AND keeping your cake!

I had a SG Classic in 300 WM with the boss. Mine was not very accurate. As it is I have a matched quartet of big pre 64's that are better guns in every way than that Classic.

The gun is just too long and heavy for me. There has to be someone who likes long and heavy. I am glad I sold mine.

I sold a few guns over the years. Not ones of the quaulity you're talking about. The fact remains that everytime I've regreted it. A synthetic stock for hunting makes a lot of sense.

It's a shame not to using a gun that shoots that well and building memories that will last a life time.
