Do you guys have any input to share as to what should considered to be MINIMUM impact velocity that a .308 150grn partition can be relied apoun for deer sized game. My thing is I have a bolt action savage 30-30 and a bunch of 150g partitions another reason is the shape of the partition is particularly well suited to the short magazine length on the savage vs other 150grn spitzers ---------------------------------------- If you waste your time a talkin' to the people who don't listen To the things that you are sayin' who do you thinks gonna hear And if you should die explainin' how the thing they complain about Or the things they could be changing who do you thinks gonna care Waylon Jennings

Don't quote me just yet, I'll have to do some more digging around. IIRC minimum is around 1800 fps for the Partition to work.

As those above have stated. They'll work. Just don't expect to be impressed with their performance at 30-30 velocities. In fact if you've killed stuff with the rifle with standard cup and core bullets before you might not like how the partitions perform at all. Partitions are a meal best served hot.

Hi Krochus, They probably would work better in your MAS BUT--- I take it you have a Md 340 Savage? You will be able to safely use a LOAD THAT WILL PRODUCE 2500 FPS. You will have a remaining velocity of 2100 fps. at 200 yds and ,just guessing, about 1925fps at 300yds. It would appear that the long and the short of it is that you willNOT be disallusioned with the performance out to 150yds. plus. How far do you think it'll be when you take your buck? Have you taken anything with your sporterized 7.5 yet? roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! According to Nosler it is not safe to load spitzer bullets in a tubular magazine, that's why they offer their 170-grain Round Nose Partition bullet, which is made to expand well at 30-30 velocities out to 200 yards. Regular spitzer bullets can be used in a tubular magazine lever action rifle if it is used as a single shot fire arm. Generally speaking, partitions need 2,000 fps to expand. Nosler's favorite powder for the 30-30 and their 170-grain partition is IMR 4895. Velocities ran between 1,900 and 2,160 fps with 4895 out of a 20 inch barrel with the 170-grain partition. IMR 4320 produced the fastest maximum velocity at 2,192 fps...Rusty.

But a number of 30/30's DO NOT have tubular magazines. These include bolt-actions like the Savage 340, the Rem. 788, and a number of different types of single-shots such as the Contender. "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."
