One of the arguments that I see when comparing the .338-06 w/ the .35 Whelen is that the 250 grain bullet of the .338-06 has higher sectional density and will penetrate better than the .35W. Theoretically, this makes sense, but out of curiosity, have any of you ever had penetration problems with a good 250 grain bullet in the .35 Whelen (i.e. is the advantage in the realm of theory)? Thanks, Lou

It's probably more theory than fact. The bullet constuction will have more to do w/ penetration than the weight. I shoot the 210NP from my .338-06 & have only recovered one, so how much more would I get going to a 250gr anything? Still, I would opt for the .338 bore. The next step up for me would be a 9.3 or .375.

Thats like compareing apples to apples, there simply is no difference....A 338 Win. will beat them both at the same recoil...

I beg to differ. I don't consider myself terribly recoil sensitive but the .338 Win is just plain unpleasant. It may have less energy than the .375 but the velocity is worse. For the extra handful of yards it gives you, I'd rather sneak closer and use the much gentler (on the shooter!) family of cartridges that is descended from the .318 WR . . . and in the spirit of generosity I will include the Whelen in that fine and noble lineage.
