w-748 in 7-08?
Hi everyone,

Has anyone tried w-748 in their 7-08? How was accuracy, velocity consistency, etc.?

I'm thinking about giving it a try, but I've heard rumors that IMR 4064 is more consistent. Of course, I already have a can of w-748 and don't have any IMR 4064 ...

748 is a EXCELLENT powder for the 308based case .. varget is a slightly, and i meant SLIGHTLY better powder for 708 ..

the imr/winchester/hogdedon site have good info, IIRC.

Many metallic silhouette shooters used 748 in their 7/08 for the velocity consistency. We found no more than 15 FPS deviation using that powder. Important to use a magnum powder for my best results. It goes through a powder measure like crap through a goose, too! Speed was not as important as consistency since scopes were changed for each animal shot. I used 140 grain bullets for all but rams and 175s for the rams in a Rem 700 Varmint. Groups were always sub 1/2 inch.

With 748 I can duplicate factory velocities, but I get better accuracy and good velocity with a compressed load IMR4350 with 140gr bullets.

My hunting load for 7mm08 Rem. is 40 grains of Winchester 748 and 139 grain Hornady Spire Point Interlock (not to be confused with the Hornady Interbond, which I have not tried). I couldn't tell you for sure what velocity is, never used a chronograph; but I do know that according a Sierra manual I browsed, it looks like velocity should be somewhere in the 2650ish range. But I have no way to back this up.

Accuracy is not outstanding, but decent: 1" at 100 yards, and better if I do my part.

Best wishes.

Last week I went to RL17 in my 7-08. It seems to be a great match. 2750fps with a 162 A Max.
Start out with bottom H4350 data.

W748 will give you velocity variance between summer & winter & it burns dirty. Very old 60 year old technology!

I recommend Varget, H4350 or VV N160.

I get exceptional accuracy with Varget and H-414 in my 7-08; Varget with 100 gn Sierra HP bullets, and H-414 with 140 gn Partitions.
