good evening, is there a better plains game set up than a 300 H&H with 220 partitions @ 2750 fps Have a old 1946 M70 supergrade w/ old kahles wien 2.3x7 the old glass is still quite clear. I wont shoot much past 300 off sticks. groups better with the 220s than 200 partitions or 200 a-frames, Have 27 28 30 33 37 calibers some with alot more power and flatter traj. but i just think this old rifle is cool, Thanks to all for any input.
I just purchased my new plains game rifle; a 1951 vintage Model 70 in 300 H&H. I am looking for a suitable load for it as well. I would like nothing more than to wear it out on game! Oh, and I have 27,28,30,32,33, and 37 calibers as well. But the rifle is cool.

It'll work but I'd prefer 200 grain A-Frames at 2,900 FPS.....both get ya the same place.....dead kudu!

Mag hunter, posted 2 favorite loads for 300 H&H in favorite loads section, they are made up w/ Hodgdon Extreme powders the best IMHO for hunting different climates, very stable. good luck with your new hammer. Jerry
I expect 99% of the big game harvested in the last 70 years could have been neatly done with a battery of: 300H&H bolt rifle 375H&H bolt rifle 470 or 500 NE double rifle
Make it a 500 NE 3" and I could live the rest of my life perfectly happy.
Yup....Hodgdon's website shows two loads that make that performance.

I really like 200 grain Nosler Partitions in my 300 H&H. Shoots flat, hits hard and will penetrate from any angle. I think it would be hard to beat the sectional density and ballistic coefficent of this bullet. I shot a eland with this load in Tanzania that was going away (follow up shot)....the bullet entered the rump and exited under the bulls chin.....that is ~4ft of penetration on a ~2000# animal. Same hunt shot an Oryx and 350 yards with no problem. I use this load on everything.

I've got my 1917 up and running, don't have any 220 grain NP but I have some 200 grain going to let them fly soon. I'd love to get your data as well if you are willing to share. I'm excited to try this rifle and see what she can do!
OOPS! Didn't read down far enough! So it is of too the Reloading page I go!
Unless hunting exclusively in the bushveld were I to take a thirty to Africa again I'd choose a premium 200 gr spitzer; they'll fly a little flatter and strike harder than the 220s past 100 yards or so.
My next trip to Zim will (hopefully) feature a CZ 300H&H alongside my CZ 404J or 416 Rigby.
The 300H&H simply has panache...
Definition of Panache: an Englishman, an American, and a Frenchman are on a flight from London to New York when the word comes up in defining something.
The Englishman says: assume you come home unexpectedly in the early afternoon and find your wife in bed with another man. If you say "excuse me" and walk out, you have panache.
The American says: assuming that, you say "excuse me, please carry on" and walk out you have panache.
The Frenchman says: no no my friends, if you walk in on that scenario, say to the man, excuse me, please carry on...and he does; then HE has panache!".
Me: I got no panache, I simply say "Bad day for you two", and try and get both with one shot
If I walked in on that situation, I would shoot them BOTH in the head, make it look like burglars did it, collect the insurance on the wife, go on an elephant hunt to Zimbabwe. THAT is panache.

Thanks to all for the advice, I will stick to the 220 partitions in the old 300 magnum they should do fine for my application. They should go together like peanut butter and jelly. Jerry
In a couple weeks my 1951 M70 300 Magnum {300 H&H} with 200g Woodlieghs is going to Zimbabwe with me for plains game along with my 9.3x74 double for buff. I have plenty of other rifles I could use for plains game but the M70 300 is such a classic it deserves to go.

Great combo. I used my 53 Model 70 300 H& H for almost all my shooting on my one and only safari. Hope to go back and take it's younger brother Classic in 375. Enjoy that great rifle. Larry

THANKS EVERYONE, I feel better about the striking power of the 300 H&H now, I guess i have read to much on the toughness of african game in the magazines, If I would have thought a little bit, skin and bone is the same today as it was 100 years ago, I guess I bought in to the hype the scribes publish to sell guns.Again many Thanks to all.
Your 300 H&H is more than cool. It is the proper light rifle to complement your heavier, long magnum rifles. I am talking about the length of the bolt throw; avoiding short-stroking the bolt. A standard long-action gun would cause you to de-train your instinctive reaction in working the bolts of your dangerous-game guns. You shouldn't want any other light rifle.

Interesting thread, ... as I just returned from the range with mine.
Original Ruger #1S - 300 H&H magnum.
1.75x-5x Burris Fullfield II scope in Warne mounts.
The ol' 300 is an easy cartridge to reload for, in my experience. This rifle has proven to be extremely accurate and its 26" tube keeps velocities up. Shoots the Federal 180gn load into very tight MOA groups @ 100yds.
Probably my favorite in the collection.
