I've got an '06 length action, and want to do something in a 30 cal. that has some real pop to it, prefer non-belted cartridge. Thought the 300 dakota might be worth a whirl--open to any input.

think big & practical, and affordable; the 9,3 X62mm cartridge...sort-of a .366-06 285gr bullet at 2500+fps. No changes necessary to the bolt or magazine box or feed rails, and you can neck up all of your old '06 brass and use it.
I have a 7mmDakota & really like the line of carts. I think the 300Dakota a better round than the 300RUM or WSM. Go for it, just buy enough brass in case Dakota doesn't make a comeback.

I have a 300 and a 330 Dakota, can't say enough about these cartridges, they are accurate and powerful rounds. They have both taken moose for me. bigbull

Guys, thanks for the feedback. I've got a 330 Dakota, and like it a lot. I've thought about the RUM, but you need a bigger action, and when looking at my manuals, you need a whole hell of a lot more powder for not much gain in fps.
You guys confirmed what I was thinking, I'll just lay in a couple hundred pieces of brass, and I should be good to go.

I would build a 30/338. Be careful with Dakota since they're apparently going down the tubes. If you make the 300 Dakota, get a lifetime supply of brass up front. It can probably be made from 404 brass but I'll bet it's a pain to do.

The Dakota cases are well made (Norma I think) & my 7mmDakota cases last quite awhile. I am up to 7 firings on my test batch, trimmed them only once, primer pockets are still tight. I would think 200rds of brass for a hunting rifle would last alooooong time.

you might consider necking down the new 375 Ruger.
This should get you a 200 grain A-Frame close to 3,000.......and in a 30-06 length cartridge.

the Dakota brass does not have the slight rebate on the rim, so 404 would be a very "iffey" proposition down the road. Why not build a 30-338 RUM Short? That case is a bit shorter, and since you'd be ordering a reamer, just make it to exactly your own specs and cut a file/trim die while you're at it.
i had a clay spencer built 300 dakota.it was built on a benchrest trued remington action with all the other accuracy enhancements.this rifle and caliber are extremely accurate.the only downside for me is a on going shoulder injury.the dakota kicked to hard so i rebarreled to 300 win mag.i now have a stainless fluted remington magnum contour spencer barrel in 300 dakota i would be willing to part with.this rifle shot .5 moa and under with different loadings.has approx 50 rds thru it.if your looking for a barrel for the action let me know!!

Dakot257, The project I'm working on, actually is a project where the barrel was part of the deal, but I may still have an interest in your barrel. yeah, most likely the 300 RUM as a parent case. That way, you just figure how much you want to shorten the 2.850" case and go from there. The 300R only tapers from .550" at the base to .525" at the shoulder, so a slightly shorter version, say 300WM length would be pretty simple.

I believe the .404jeff is very close to the Dakota. I have used RUM case to make .404jeff cases & they work fine. I think you would have little problem getting them to work for Dokata brass in a pinch. Just buy enough brass to last you.
