9.3x62 CZ carbine???

I am posting this here because it seems that the African Hunting group is most familiar with this caliber and the CZ rifles.

This weekend I had my hands on a CZ carbine in 9.3X62 with 20" barrel and manlicher type stock. It pointed very well and of course was cute as could be.

My questions are: 1. Is the short barrel going to severly cut the velocity and therefore the effectiveness of this round? 2. How problematic will the full stock be and is it much harder to bed properly? 3. Can the set trigger be replaced?

All comments will be appreciated.

1. Large bores are not noticeably effected by shorter barrels.

2. Why would you want to bed a rifle if it doesn't have any accuracy problems?

3. AHR makes a replacement trigger, but the factory was is excellent in both the normal and set positions.

Hello Mark

My 9.3 x 62 was my first rifle. No kudu ever found that it's 285 gn bullet lacked velocity and, unfortunately, I was never able to recover any bullet either. They just kept sailing right off into the blue yonder. Admittedly it has a 24" barrel - but it flies to the shoulder to the manner born.

Full stock rifles. I'll freely admit that on the one hand I can't see why people like them - but on the left hand, after 5 or 6 shots from my 8x68, I begin to see the point of that extra barrel insulation.

CZ and set triggers. There you may have a point. Some years back I cleaned up a friends brand-new Brno. It proved impossible to adjust the set triger to release at a lighter pressure than the normal trigger. After a little bit of judicious stoning we got that sorted out and it worked just fine. (Usual caveat - if you have not worked on triggers before - go find a gunsmith and offer to pay him to teach you how to do that job. Failing that find one who will let you watch while he does the job. This will also make you appreciate why gunsmiths are the most highly underpaid people on earth)

Remember, you don't have to make use of the set trigger feature - but if you practice using it on the range, I'll bet that you will realise that it is an asset for the longer range shots.

Having written that - long range shots with a 9.3 would be anything beyond 180m. The trajectory starts becoming a bit like a howitzer.

enjoy it - cheers edi

Mark,

I've been looking at this same rifle myself and had many of the same questions. Also, I'd like to know if there are lower rings than those that come with the rifle and who makes them and where to get them.

Based on descriptions of everyone's use of this cartridge and ideal scope would be the Leupold 1.5-5X.

If I owned one of these I would wack a 2x compact leupold fixed on it. There a supurb scope and I have one on my 45/70 and it is a supurb all rounder. And do not think you can not take longer shots with 2x I have also found since I have wound all my variables back to 2 & 3 x I am hitting more game.

Well, after a bit of research, I've hit on the Talley rings but don't know if they make a ring for the 19mm (?) mounts on the CZ.

I would prefer a 2.5X fixed as this is what I use on most of my rifles now, but feel that the 1.5-5X might be more useful at the longer ranges with this cartridge.

I wish everyone would stop talking about 9.3s. [Mad] Before I joined AR, I scarcely knew what a 9.3 cartridge was. Now I'm convinced they are dandy things and I want one so bad I can taste it.

Trouble is I don't need it and my wife would likely shoot me with it if I did get one.

So all this 9.3 talk is just killing me. Can't we move along to some gun I already have and talk about it? Please! [Frown]

Hey Pecos45

Come on in - the water's just fine.

Nice to know that you love your wife too!

Just to add to your dilemma - have you ever considered getting a 6.5x68 as your one and only rifle.

cheers edi

Me too... I checked out the CZ site and they don't have a USA dealer, so how does one find one of these rifles? RCBS or Redding should have the dies, I would think. I have a buddy whose mother lives in Bend and he is going to get me some bullets from Nosler next time he goes down there. I hear they are a buck a piece so it's not going to be plinking rifle.

BTW Mark. My brother just got a job flying for Grant and is spending a lot time with a buddy who lives in Dillingham. He has his own 172 and is going to be doing some flight instruction there. This spring I'd like to come up and go black bear hunting with him. How is the bear situation in your area? I'm hoping to have a 9.3 by then. I get up there I'll stand you to a beverage of your choice.

Mod 12,
I bought mine from here,
http://pdmall.com/CZC/rifles~3.htm
Had a local FFL holder handle the paper work, no problems. The bullets are made by nosler, speer, swift,Barnes, etc, at normal prices. I used Hornady dies as I like the straight line seater.
Good Luck

I bought exactly that: a CZ 550 Full stocked, 9.3x62. Shoots Lapua 286 grs bullets in an inch ( or less ). Recoil is fine with me - just a shove. Its not so fine with the scope. I use an old, big, steel, not centered!! 8x56 Kahles.

Centering is possible by a good smith with CZ mounts. Only problem: needed 50 rounds to sight the thing in ( o.k., there were some trial shots with other ammo, PMP and Norma, to check poi, too ).

After 15 rounds: all fine, but scope slipped 2 mm forward. After further 15 rounds: one screw in rear mount broken. 15 rounds later: all seems fine.

As to some poster here: for my chamois buck ( in Winter guise!! ) last week I used my fathers trusty 6.5x68.

Fazit: for far shooting on medium game: 6.5x68. For big game at distances up to ~ 225 m: 9.3x62 ( because of heavy bullets and somewhat limited powder space the 9.3x62 lends itself well to shorter barrels ). For Red stag and/or Chamois and far shooting: the old classic: 8x68S.

As much as I want to give my local dealer business, I just can't see paying $200 US for the privilege. That's the difference between what he will charge and that guy on GunBroker charges. I can get another FFL to handle the deal. Jeez. Is nothing simple anymore?

Oh, ya, I had the CZ site, I was thinking BRNO when I typed CZ. I'd like to see the full stock with with an American styled butt. I don't care for the Euro butt but would live with it. The CZ American would look good with express sites and a barrel band. I see Old West Scrounger has all the brass and dies. Thanks for the ideas.

The owner's manual that came with mine says you can remove the set-trigger parts and still have a functioning trigger.

But that's gunsmith country in my book...

Hope this helps, Okie John.

Okie John... My .458 came with set trigger installed and a standard trigger with a screwdriver in a blue velvet pouch. Don't know if they still do that. Email the distributor/importer in KC and ask. Good luck Pack Rat [Wink]
