I'm looking at purchasing a Mod. 70 claimed to be pre-64, but just barely. Can I tell by examining the piece weather or not it is pre-64? If so, what should I look for? Thanks for your help.

Look for year of manufacture stamped on the underside of the barrel just in front of the receiver ring. "49" for 1949, etc.

If it does not have a long Mauser type exractor and is a push feed it is not a pre 64. there is a serial number cutoff also but I cna't remember it offhand.

Good luck - they certainly are a classic.

Just look for the claw leaf extractor on the side of the bolt, it its there its Pre-64, if its not then its post 64.
