Riflemen, I'm looking at purchasing a Mod. 70 claimed to be pre-64, but just barely. Can I tell by examining the piece weather or not it is pre-64? If so, what should I look for? Thanks for your help. Roger Barker

Look for year of manufacture stamped on the underside of the barrel just in front of the receiver ring. "49" for 1949, etc.

If it does not have a long Mauser type exractor and is a push feed it is not a pre 64. there is a serial number cutoff also but I cna't remember it offhand.

From Chuck Hawks' article on the Model 70: "I have read that production of Pre-1964 Model 70's stopped at serial number 581,471." A link to the article: http://www.chuckhawks.com/win70.htm Chuck's site has a tremendous amount of great information on everything related to firearms: http://www.chuckhawks.com/index2.guns.htm You can identify the actual year of the rifle's manufacture at this site: http://armscollectors.com/sn/windates.htm Good luck - they certainly are a classic.

Just look for the claw leaf extractor on the side of the bolt, it its there its Pre-64, if its not then its post 64.
