303Guy.270win 130np : what distance does it stop being a reliable Elk combo?

I have to look in the mirror to shave every morning and want to be able to respect the guy I see there.
I shall be rembering that one! But I cannot quote it - something to do with being bearded.

holzaugeThe most practical limit to your effective hunting range with any gun and ammo combination is how far you can reliably hit a 4" circle allowing for the hunting conditions. Few folks can reliably do that beyond 300 yards. Fewer need too. If you can shoot a four inch circle beyond 300 yards, and the place you hunt makes it necessary, more gun would give you more clean kills. I use a range finder when I hunt and feel comfortable shooting my .270 with 130 gr. Rem factory loads for small whitetail out to @350 yards if the conditions allow, but when I think 300+ yard shots are really likely I use my 7mm mag...even for bambis. The gun is heavier and shoots flatter. Both things leave me more margin for error out that far.
