Hello All

I'm in the process of downsizing the gun collection (way to many safe queens). I'm retiring and moving into smaller housing so some things have to go unfortunately.

Anyway, I've decided I want to get a take down /switch barrel rifle in 300 win mag & 375 H&H to take the place of the ones I have now.

I'm leaning heavily towards a Sauer 404 or a Dakota 76 traveler. The Blaser R8 is a way way very way distant 3rd possibility,

So my question; do any of you fine gentlemen (and ladies) use or have used either of these rifles? Likes / dislikes /etc.? I am particularly interested in your experiences with the rifles returning to "zero" after being taken down / put back together or when swapping barrels?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards,
Longfeather

I'm no help on your info on the Sauer/Dakota rifle you are talking about...but there is one of these "switch barrel" Winchester Model 70 CRF that comes through my town a few times a year that is .300 win mag / 375 h&h. I think the price was around $2000 iirc. An interesting custom rifle

Cool gun and interesting concept. I should have taken photos or paid more attention to it. Maybe we will get another gun show soon once this Covid stuff is done

I love the R8 platform. Very accurate, SAFE and is a great platform for various calibers.

What application do you have for these things?

The idea used to appeal to me to save weight when going on safari - but then it occurred to me that you can't make rapid switches if something big jumps out when you have the smaller barrel in place.

The idea of having a switch barrel gun is just for travel purposes. The gun would be a companion piece to my double rifle. It's hard enough to travel with two long guns any more let along traveling with three. So if I can combine two into one and being a take down I can put it and my double in a much smaller, less conspicuous travel case.

I would imagine this was built for just such a purpose, a lot of gun for the money, someone should buy it and put it to use

What are you hunting? 416 Taylor and 338 Wm should cover everything?

i've had switch barrel rifles before - they are a much better thought than they are practical. it seemed whichever barrel i had on , i needed the other one

I have owned several HS Precision rifles through the years and made several trips to Africa with my 300 barrel for plains game.
Other than the take down assembly adding weight the accuracy and convenience far outweighed any disadvantage.
First Stop Guns located in Rapid City, SD has a two barrel set for sale now for $4000. I believe the barrels are 300 Mag and 375 H&H.
If you have interest visit their web site and then talk to Mark Blote. They usually have Dakota Travelers as well. The two barrel Dakota will be closer to $8000.

I thought a take down switch barrel rifle was a good idea once. I found the reality much less appealing. Too much margin of error involved to soothe me.
They’re not for everyone.

Having gone the switch barrel route several times, I never want another one, if for no other reason than you always have the wrong barrel on it when needed...Ive seen a number of switch barrels that didn't meet my accuracy criteria..I like having two guns in the safari truck or in my elk camp...As far as travel, two guns are no less trouble than one, three is too many IMO..
