Hello Duke, 180g bullets will be a good choise for 300 Rum... Using bondet or cooper bullets is a must if you don't want to destroy your game!! The type of the bullets depends of the game you want to hunt and of the distance you shoot. Ps:A mountain man is a lonely man! I agree 100%!! Faina I prefer to die standing that to live in knee

I agree the 180gr(anything) should do fine. Or the 200gr(anything) if it shoots better. I've seen and shot over two dozen of the 300RUMs and they all were great shooting, very accurate rifles. Shouldn't be difficult to get anything you want performing well in it. Best of luck to you.

I like 200gr bullets like the Accubond better in the 300 RUM than 180's. I think Retumbo was made to shoot 200gr bullets in the 300 RUM. RL-25 works extremely well with them also....................DJ ....Remember that this is all supposed to be for fun!..................

I would be looking at the 180 gr and 200 gr AB and pick the one that shoots best. Either bullet will open up on deer. JD338

Thank you all very much for your comments, either grain will be fine with me our deer arent that hard to open up. They are desert deer 120lbs, not 350 lb giants like most states. Now Im hearing that CCI MAG primers work well, any comments? Hit me with some knowledge!!! A mountain man is a lonely man!

Duke, My Buddy has a custom-made featherweight 300 RUM on a Remington 700 action with a 28" tube (@ right bbl length for this cartridge IMO) and we've had alot of fun with it (other than shooting from a bench). He had the rifle made up in Colorado for similar to what AZ desert hunting can be - delivering the Goods at extended ranges, where it really shines. We started with Barnes 180 gr. TSX's; worked up a very accurate load with (alot of) VVN-560 (we also tried H-1000, RL-22 & H-4831SC) w/WLRM primers using a Lee Factory Crimp Die; crimping the bullet in the front relief groove. All has worked really good so far. We've never given a second thought to using other than Magnum primers in this case as there's a bunch of powder involved. I had Federal 215's & Winchester WLRM's on hand and we've used both without any sigificant velocity differences over the Beta Chrony. THEN we stumbled onto Swift Scirocco II's, actually from loads we'd made up in our 300 Win. Mags. both the 180 & 150 grainers. Not only extremely accurate and from our results in Namibia on larger-r-r game, where bullet performance was outstanding. So they had to be just that much more of a good thing in the next step up in the Grand Scheme of Things - the 300 RUM. Anyway, for a giggle, and on Arizona-sized Couse & Mule Deer; try the 150 grain Swift Scirocco II's in your 300 RUM - in our experience this combination is what the so-called "Death Ray" Syndrome is all about. Cheers, Number 10
