Guys,

Have a bunch of 250 gr .338 Nosler CT Partitions as well as a couple of hundred 250 gr Woodleigh Protected Points. Manufacturers suggest both will open up at velocities as low as 1800 fps.

Which is likely to be the better bullet for use in a .338-06 versus use in a .338 Win Mag. Targets likely to be deer, piggies, elk and bear.

Thanks!

Mike

The Nosler Partition would be better on the lighter game IMHO.

The Woodleigh PP were designed by Geoff McDonald to give more penetration and later set up than his RN Soft.... so they are the ones for your elk thumb

I'd be happy slapping anything with a Woodleigh 250gr ... but I like to call 200yards my maximum range and prefer faster opening/hold together pills ... so it'd be a Woodleigh RN for me!
Cheers...

The Woodleigh protected point will be a 'harder' bullet than the NP. Either one should be a great heavy game bullet in the .338-06 or .338 WM. I shoot mostly 210 TSX's in my .338, if going to a 250, I'd probably shoot partitions or Swift.

I like 77grs. RE-22, WW brass, CCI 250 with the 250 NPGs in my Dakota 76-.338WM. This shoots sub-moa consistently and is a MAX. load, IMO, start about 72 grs. and work up.

Buffalobreath,

Congratulations on the Elk tag!!! Bet you'll have a wonderful fall.

My pre-64 M70 with a Krieger cut rifled barrel likes IMR 4350 and the 250 gr Nosler Combined Technology Partition (bought at the same time you bought yours ... wish I had bought more!). Rifle is the second best bolt rifle I own ... very practical Gun Kote finish, NECG Irons, and McMillan stock. Holds 2" at 300 yards with a 8-9x40 MC Zeiss Conquest Wink

That powder and AA 4350 also produces lovely groups with the Barnes 225 gr X bullet.

I have had great luck with the 225gr Trophy Bonded in a 338WinMag. It is the biggest bullet here, recovered from an Eland under the off side shoulder at 330+ yards in Namibia after a two day, 30+ mile "stalk". He dropped to one shot, through the heart.

The Nosler would probably be better for light game, but I wouldn't hesitate to use either one..There is hardly such a thing as bullet failure with a 250 gr. bullet at 2700 FPS, if it fails to open it will leave a blood trail and they won't go far, if it explodes then you lose a lot of meat but they hit the dirt pronto..

90% of your bullet failure on game comes from using the smaller calibers.
