I have extensive experience with the 9.3x62 owning 4 of my own now as well as loading for six others. There is a large following of like minded shooters in our area and we all shoot the same loading.

9.3x62 Mauser
Lapua brass, Federal 210M primers, 61-63gr. IMR4895, Moly coated Barnes 250X. You can load non moly bullets but start at 58gr and work up in half grain increments. Top velocity has been in the 2650 f/s range. The North Fork soft point bullets are a bit quicker with less powder.

lb404,

I will be taking deliver of my 9.3x62 this weekend. It is built on a 1909 Argentine DWM action and has a Lothar Walther "E" contour barrel.

I need to load up some ammo for it. Right now I have the follow bullets and Lapua brass:

Barnes Banded Solids 286 grain
Barnes TSX 286 grains
Barnes TSX 250 grains
North Fork 286 grains
North Fork 250 grains
Nosler Partition 286 grain

Any good ideas on starting loads. I would love to get a safe load for the heavier bullets at +/- 2,400 fps.

Thanks.

Tim

Shumba,

Congratulations on the anticipated arrival of your 9.3x62 - I think you'll like this cartridge!

While I'm sure others have their favorites and especially here in Europe we are at the mercy of local authorities and the "Powder Moguls" for powder availability, so occaisionally not all the desired powders are available.

With the bullet range you've mentioned I've had good luck with VV N-140, VV N-540, IMR 4320, IMR & H-4895.

Can't quite pick a favorite of the best two but for me they are VV N140 & H-4895.

Several of us just had a Chrony session on the range the other day with our .375H&H's and 9.3x62's. Perhaps as a group we are all just a little bit conservative but we were getting (20"-24" barrels) in the +/- 2370 fps range with 250-286 grain bullets. We were pretty much shooting similar to what you've got; Nosler's, North Forks, A-Frames, Speers and Woodliegh's.

Cheers,

Number 10

Shumba,
Look in the Reloading forum and search under 9.3 and Kudude, you'll find my extended piece on loads for the 9.3x62. While it deals with only the 286 Partition of the bullets you mention, it covers all those bullet weights.

If I were you, I'd get some Speer 270's just because they are cheap, and wring the rifle out. See what it does with that bullet. It will give you generaly insight into whether your rifle is "fast" or "slow", and then you can use that knowledge to develop loads for the bullets you listed. Kudude
