| I would go the donor action route. My experience has been that I can build a rifle with a 700 action all trued up, a hart, lilja, pac nor, or lothar walthar barrel, mcmillan stock, and optics of my choice for less than the $2500 or so you will spend on an HS rifle. And I dare say mine will shoot as good if not better. Unless I am going to be strictly shooting from the bench I stay away from the HS stocks. Just too bulky feelin to be packin around hunting. |

| Andy, Everyone I've talked to said their HS rifle will shoot the guaranteed 1/2" or less with 3 shots, although it's my opinion that it's not that hard to shoot 1/2" groups with 3 shots, as long as your rifle is set-up correctly and you have good handloads, I do have alot of their stocks, and frankly wouldn't have it any other way, they're strong as hell and have a very solid feel to them, the sporter stock on my 700 S/S is got to be one of my favorite stocks, very similar to a Rem. classic but with a higher comb, Jay |

| Andy, I own 3 of them and like them very well. Some of their sporter stocks are IMO a little thick in the wrist but I really like thier varmit and tactical stocks especially with adjustable cheekpieces. All of mine have shot at least 1/2 inch groups at 200 yds. When I am shooting well they will do much better. I think that it's nice to have an accurately milled action from the start instead of having to machine a warped 700 to get there. Gunsmiths love 700 actions because they have made tons of money straightening them up! HS Barrels are as good or better than any barrel out there. You can spend a lot of money reworking a 700 action and have an excellent rifle - I've done it occasionaly. But IMO you will maintain your value in a factory custom better. Just try and get your $2500 back selling your Remington 700 custom unless it is built by a famous Smith. If it is a famous gunsmith it will likely be a lot more than $2500, check out prices on Jarret and Sisk rifles. I think that you would be much more likely to maintain value in a HS, or other known rifle. For the Money I think that Hill Country, Christiansen (Rebarreled 700's) or HS Precision are the best rifles you can get for under $3000.........DJ |

| Thanks for all the advice. I have gone down the self customising route twice now - 1, Rem 700 in 25-06 Krieger stainless barrel and HS Stock. 2, Tikka 595 in 22-250 AI with Border stainless barrel in Mcmillan stock, I am very pleased with both of these but now want a factory rifle that is a bit special, which is why I thought of a HS. If you are getting 1/2 inch at 200 yds regularly then that is as good as my two customs which is fine for my needs.
I just need to sort out a way of importing one from over there to here. In the UK vendors tend to transfer the $dollars price and change it to UK pounds without looking at the exchange rate so we end up getting ripped off. If the price ticket is $2000 then we pay 2000! Not good! |
