Is there much difference between the 2 calibers? I know that Remington makes a 7mm saum in a model 7 that is much lighter than the 7mm rem mag. That is a plus for me. What about accuracy any difference between the 2? I also know by using the shorter barrel on the model 7 you loose a little velocity but the gun will mostly be used for deer hunting. I will use my 338 win mag for anything bigger. Any input is appreciated. Thanks bluecollar

You'd never notice the difference on deer. You might notice the lighter weight of the M7 though. If it's just a deer rifle, you don't NEED a 7mm Mag of any type, unless you are shooting over 350 yards. They will work though . I'd pick up a M7 or SA M700 in 260 or 7mm-08 if I were looking for a deer rifle. I did, the 260 in a SA M700 Mtn rifle, and it is awesome! The 2 deer I shot w/140 gr. Noslers died just as quick as the 3 deer I shot with my 7mm Mag, and it kicks like a 30-30!

I have both a7mm Rem Mag in a browning A-Bolt 26" barrel and a 7mm Saum in a Ruger M77 MKII with a 22" barrel. I can reach over 3300 fps with the 7mm Rem. Mag and a 140 grain bullet and about 3100 fps with the 7mm Saum. so with four inch more barrel I get a little over 200 more fps with the 7mm Rem. Mag but I disliked the long barrel for carrying in the woods and had decided to get a short action rifle and was considering a 7mm-08 but when the 7mm saum came out I went with it instead. Accuracy for the 7mm Saum has been very good with a lot less recoil than the 7mm Rem Mag. which was suprising since the weight of the rifles is almost the same. Both are great rounds with max velocity going to the 7mm Rem Mag but compactness and handling going to the 7mm Saum.
