Gents:

I was in a shop yesterday and someone had put together a Whelen with the following specs:

Ruger 77 action (tang type)
Shaw barrel
B&C Medalist stock
26 inch barrel
scope - i forget which

this thing pointed like a dream and wasn't the least bit cumbersome. pretty thin barrel profile. $495 was the price. wish i were RH.

at any rate, what sorts of velocities could one expect with a 225-250 grain bullet?

I built a Whelen with a 24" barrel and it got a 225 going a max of about 2725...I think a 26" might gain a bit but not much...it has a pretty big expansion ratio...ie: bore sizeand barrel length to case capacity.

If your interested it's a descent price, the 26" barrel is a little long for me but it could always be trimmed back. Mine is a 35 Whelen Ackley, and am very close to max load, and it shoots 5/8" groups @100 yards all day long with 225 bullets, don't have a chronograph, so no telling how fast it's going.

Like I said, I'm LH and am mostly curious as to what sorts of velocity to expect out of that tube given that most Whelens seem to come out at 22-24"

I would stop talking about it and go buy it before it is gone. Mine is a 24" barrel on a Mauser action.

Meddle not with dragons, for you are good and crunchy with ketchup.

sounds like a real good rifle to me too, but I like 22 to 24 inch barrels on 06 length rounds.
But like you say cut and crown, mabye add a good looking sight set and that would be a great hunting rifle for sure !
