I tried some Barnes Solids on Buffalo and Wildebeast about 15 years ago in my .340 WM They worked fine, with full penitration on the side for Buff and almost on the Wildebeast front to back.

On smaller animals they shot right through and left a small hole (like Barnes x's [Wink] ) The animals didn't even realize that they had been shot unless you hit a bone.

I have used them for years..I have shot Buffalo, Bison, elk, Lion and everything but elephant...I love the Woodleigh bullets both solid and soft RN...The 384 B&C elk on my web page took a 300 gr. 338 Woodleigh in the flank and it exited behind his jaw and left a 3" exit hole....The cape buff on my web also took a soft and a solid in that weight and was down and out in 50 yards or so....It turns bear inside out.

It adds a new caliber demision to the 338 and makes the 338 the full equal to a 375 H&H..I get 2450 FPS plus a tad with a cup of RL-15, 22 or 19
and I could do better than that but thats were the .5 group is and that suits me fine...

If you ever use it, you'll be hooked..Give youself a lot of open country because it will shoot through your elk or Buffalo, 4 pines or Acascias, skip across the Sahara and kill two whores in Dar Es Salaam in a matter of seconds. Now how can you beat that.

Ray
I seems like Im able to get hold of some of the Woodleigh 300 gr RN for the upcoming moose hunt her in Norway.
I just wonder if my standard Ruger M 77, MKII will handle such heavy bullets regarding accuracy.
I got the factory 24 " barrel, and the Ruger Home page says it got a 1:10 twist ??
Powders will be eighter Norma or Vithavouri.
What do you suggest ??

Regards

Arild Iversen: I know Ray will provide you with a good answer, but I will add that perhaps you don't need such a big punch to kill a moose. For example, Alaska moose are much larger, and we use lighter than 300-grains bullets.

Some of the bullets you may want to consider are from 210 to perhaps 250-grains. The 275 to 300 grains would be my favorite for the large Alaska bears and such. I would worry about too much penetration from a heavy bullet such as the 300-grain Woodleigh.

I could be wrong, of course, so lets see what Ray thinks.

Arild,
Don't know about your rifle, but they shoot extremely well in all the 338s I have tried them in..Most RN bullets are very accurate...My gun is a 1x10 twist...

I agree with Ray Alaska, I love the 210 and 250 Noslers, also the 225 North forks..but I like the 300 Woodleighs best so far, and that might change tomarrow, who knows

Thanks Ray and Ray [Smile]
Yes I know Im well off with my 250 Nosler PT for Norwegian moose, and that has been my standard set up for years.
But as a handloader its always exiting to try somthing new or something else ( talking about ammo now [Wink] )
Guess I will run a batch of the 300 gr. Woodleigh just for the heck of it, and who knows, it might be my new stand by for a while if it turns out right.

Arild,
Thats what happened to me, I am a consistant experimentor with calibers, loads and bullets...

I wanted something different to play with and tried the 300 gr. RN Woodleighs on a lot of big stuff and liked them so well I just keep going back to it...nothing makes many steps after a good solid hit with that bullet.
