Can you help me with comments on the 300 Remington Ultra Magnum. Whats good and whats bad?

I have a 300 win mag today and think about changing, to something where I still can use the .30 bullets.

Any recomendations on guns?

Do a quick search of both this and the "reloading" section of this forum, there has been quite a bit of discussion of this caliber here over the last year or so. From what I gather it can be quite accurate and, if you can keep the bullets together, is devastating. Folks have had some complaints about the brass holding up however.

I don't see any practical hunting advantage that a .300 RUM would give you over a .300 Win. If I felt the need for something more I would be inclined to look at moving up to a .338.

I just sold (gave away) my 300RUM M700 Sendaro to my brother. I just didn't have any use for it. I bought it in a moment of weakness at a gun show and after I got home with it, realized it's just another rifle I didn't have time for. It was one of the most accurate out of the box M700's I've ever owned, Grouped under an 1" consistatly with factory 180gr premiums. I've read a lot of people complain about the round, I personally like it. If you want it to go fast you gotta burn a little more powder [Wink] The recoil wasn't anything like I thought it would be, it's very managable but this could be atributed to the rifle itself, a standard weight gun might be a differnt story. If I'm ever in the market for a long range 30 again I'd definatly buy another over a .300WIN. If I had a .300WIN that shot good I don't know that I would feel the need to upgrade though.

It's loud, really really loud. At the range last weekend a friend was shooting a Boss equipped Browning in .270 at the next table, I thought it was loud whenever he fired. Two benches over another was shooting a new 300 RUM with a brake on it, now I know what loud really is. Having said that he seemed to shoot it pretty well.

I love it. Its been a very veritile round that seems to shoot well with 150gr bullets all the way up to 220gr. But if I had a 300Win that shot well, I don't know that I would bother. If you got the itch, I might get WSM just to have a short action mag. But other than that, the 300win is just enough. I had a 338RUM, but just traded. I figured out I really didn't have a use for it and wanted another 270 to play with. Since the 300RUM fills my bill for any animal I hunt.

The good: accurate, fast, versatile if handloaded

The bad: recoil, BIG powder usage when reloading,
VERY expensive factory ammo $35-$39/box

I'm having a hard time keeping mine attached to the stock. I'm worried about wearing out the holes in the action that the stock and trigger attach to.I haven't had a chance to kill anything with it yet so can't speak about performance on game. I will say that I've been able to find a sub MOA load with all the powders I've tried so far RL 19, RL 22, and AA Magnum.

A couple of guys I went elk hunting with this year used 700 BDL's in .300 Ultra Mag, I have one that I play with (my son will use it on elk & mukledeer next year). Both hunters use factory ammo, 180g Partitions. All three rifles are excellent shooters, under .75MOA out to 300 yards. They killed 2 bulls (1 5*5 at 525 yards!) a cow elk and 2 mullies. The BDL's are a little light, recoil can be a pain without a muzzle brake. A Sendaro would be nice if you don't mind carring around the extra weight. Definitely a step up in velocity and trajectory compared to a .300 Win Mag. I wouldn't get one to replace a .300 Weatherby Mag. The downside is the cost of factory ammo, or if you reload, their appetite for large amounts of powder. Recoil is harsh enough that after 20 rounds from a bench you'll be ready to put it down for awhile. I prefer my "heavy" .338 Ultra Mag to hunt with. [Big Grin]

I haven't as yet got to shoot anything but paper with mine, but the more I shoot it the more I like it.
Ammo- does cost a little more than the High End Factory Loads at 35$ to 45$ a box vs 29$ to 49$ for the .300 Win Mag(which I have never owned). And if you reload it It will use more Powder.
I find that the Recoil isn't as bad as some have reported, but mine is a Winchester and I haven't seen a Remington in a Mag Round yet that
didn't Kick Like a Mule, not a saying anything bad about Remington.
My view is that if you like a Rifle in the .300 RUM and wish to step up somewhat form the .300 Win Mag.Depending on Loads and Bullets 200 to 300 fps or so.Then Get IT.

CChunter, now from reading some of these posts, I was just wondering why I ever bought that 300RUM in the first place, then I suddenly remembered that my old 300 Whinny (now the wife's gun)was just a little short on smack em shooting across a canyon at elk near 570 yards away, according to the range finder. Sometimes a man has got to do, what he has to do, inorder to get the job done and if that includes shooting across a canyon, so be it. [Razz]

The new Ultra mag rifle can push a 180 grn Barnes XLC bullet close to 200fps more than the same bullet in the wife's rifle. The accuracy is better also out of this stainless barrel model 70 Winchester. 92.5 grains of MRP charts a velocity of 3315fps out of my new Ultra mag. It shoots 1/2 groups of 3 shots at the bench with this load. I know that is nothing to get excited about though right? [Big Grin]
