I will be using my Remington 700 30-06 for Freerange Blackbuck Antelope this hunting season. (its the smallest caliber I have)
Would the Federal Vital Shock 150gr. Nosler Accubond be a good ammo/bullet for this hunt?
The Blackbuck antelope is the main quarry, but I also have a chance at Free Range axis as well, so I want to keep that in mind in ammo selection as well.
Thanks in advance,
W.Smiler

Sounds like a great choice. Neither blackbuck nor axis are hard to kill.

Correct me if I am wrong but isnt a 100lb black buck a large one? So the size of an impala ewe...

If thats the case then even a .243 would probably be quite suitable, and would no doubt exit even on quartering away shots everytime. I reckon a bonded 150gr bullet from a .30-06 will do just fine! Wink

Most of the Blackbucks I have seen could be downed with a 243. '06 with Accubonds is using enough gun!

Your '06 with the 150 grain AB will do just fine. Back in the early 90s, I used a 15" XP-100 in .250 Savage spitting out 85 grain Ballistic Tips at app. 2950 fps. On a tough, somewhat quartering shot at 260 yards, I got complete penetration on this 90 pound animal.

Both sides were exactly 20 1/8th.

Good luck on your upcoming hunt. thumb

And, of course, don't forget to post pictures!

Have seen many taken on a company lease we had out of Mountain Home, TX. These are great little game animals and the biggest challenge is getting a still shot. They seem to move more than most game animals.

When hit they can be 2 seperate animals. Good hit and they fold up well. Poor hit, regardless of caliber and they can cover quite a distance.

Caliber IMHO is not a real issue. Look at the pic, they are not very big. I've seen quite a number of taken very cleanly with 223's (63gr Sierra works great!). If I had to pick the 'best' it would be a 243 with 100gr. Maybe better yet would be the old 250 Savage.

For the 30-06 you really don't even need the tougher build of the Accubond. Any regular 150gr like Sierra GameKing, Speer HotCor, Hornady InnerLocked are great. Heck the Remington CoreLoct, Win PP is aok too.

I'd keep velocity down a bit. High velocity rounds can tear up too much of the tasty meat. Often they look much farther away than actually are because of their size.

good luck,

Pete A.

I know I know, I probably should by one, but i figuired it would nt hurt if I just use the one I have to save on some expenses.
Heck, i got a full body bear at the taxidermists from a Hunt with Jim shockeys outfit this past may. Local free range sika deer hunt here in october which will get a full body mount if I am succesfull( they are the small japanies sub-species), a wild boar hunt in California over the holidays which I will use this same gun for and will go on the wall, and this blackbuck hunt which will make a beutafull mount. then theres the deposit I just put on for a MT Lion hunt dec of 2010 and last but not least, I just ordered a new scope for the gun..
If I told my wonderfull wife I need another gun, I am afraid she'd kill me. dancing
