Bill, About the only thing I know about the rifle is that it is a Mauser (98) action, and they were well made. The action today is much sought after as it is one of the best. Most were in 30-06 that I saw years ago in Sears. Someone in the know will come along with details about who made them and in what years. I remember seeing them in Sears years ago. Don

Winchester made the gun. A copy of the Model 670. Most likely made in early 70's.

Your "Sears" rifle was made by Winchester and is essentially the post-64 Winchester Model 70 with a hardwood stock and impressed checkering. Winchester's own "economy" model was the very similar Model 670. Although the post-64 was not popular among rifle purists when it was introduced, it was actually very functional and a pretty good rifle. By the way, earlier Sears bolt rifles (Model 50 and/or 51, I believe) were built on an FN Mauser action. There was also a lever action Sears model contemporaneous with your rifle that was a Winchester-built .30-30 variation of the Model 94.

So, by the sounds of it this rifle prolly isnt worth much in terms of money. This rifle is actually the first rifle i ever fired at the age of twelve so its worth alot in sentimental value.

correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't the 670 have a 2 position safety like a remington p-17???? on the side of the receiver??? the pics on this gun show a 3 position safety on the bolt...all the 670's ive seen/handled/shot had a different safety than pictured on this gun.... go big or go home ........ The Sears model 53, just like the Winchester, did indeed have a three position safety. You have a good, serviceable rifle worth about $450.00 if it is in good condition.

I got a 670 around here in .308 Win that I just have to keep due to the amount of deer & Hogs that its killed. Any ideas on when it was made. Ser # 129xxx. It even has the same over and under mounts along with open sights. Damn I love that gun. Its just an ugly old killer. Thanks, ED

It was indeed made by Winchester, and, as several other respondents have said, is more-or-less a copy of the Winchester 670. It has the Winchester 3-position safety. The earlier Model 51 Sears rifle was on the FN Mauser action -- not this one. I doubt that this one is worth $450. I like everything about what you show in your picture except those horrible see-through scope mounts. I recommend you get a lower mount and mount the scope lower to the bore of the rifle. Then find out what loads it likes and go hunting with it. It's a 30-06, and that is good enough for anything native to North America (and most of the rest of the world). "How's that whole 'hopey-changey' thing working out for ya?"

Hey! I have a set of those horrible see thru scope mounts! In a box. They were given to me and I wouldn't use them either.

The bad thing is if they start calling you from the box. I cuss them, call them names and they still to this day remain on that 670. Heck they maybe originals from they day it was bought for all I know. Thanks, ED

No better reason to keep one! I have some that are plain ugly but they have some sentimental feelings attached. They too stay as-is.
