What velocity is anybody getting with a .284 Win. in a 22" barrel with 140gr. and 150g. bullets? I would like info from someone using a bolt action with worked up loads. I've had this notion, for a week or so, that I might try to find a short action 7-08 and have the chamber reamed to .284 Win. My son shoots an old Ruger Flat bolt rifle in .284 with a 22" factory barrel. He has been using Speer 130 grain bullets in both the flat base "Hot core" and spitzer boat tail versions moving at 3125 fps. This rifle is a long action however the chamber is cut to standard .284 spec's so there is no difference from a short action in that respect. He has been hammering Deer, Elk and Antelope with this load for several years with excellent results. My intent has always been to work up a load with him for 140's but so far the load with 130's is very reliable and scorching fast and flat shooting. Good luck with yours, I highly recommend the .284 Win!

I built a 284 win on a long action Rem 700 last year and long throated it for 160 gr. bullets. I am able to get 2900 fps with it loaded with RL 17 powder and the bullets seated out. So, I am getting 7mm mag velocities with 6 gr less powder and it is very soft shooting, They elk don't like it either. If you build one, go long action so you can seat the bullets out some. Thanks, Daryl.
