Guys,

Have a couple of questions about the 9.3x62 and the CZ 550 rifles.

1) Anyone tried the 9.3x62 Graf brass? It's about half the price of Norma brass.

2) How do 286 gr Nosler Partitions perform in the 9.3x62? and

3) Are there Leupold QD rings available for the Cz 550?

(My 416 Rigby CZ 550 was modified by Heritage Arms to have a steel Weaver rail across the bridges. Use Leupold QD rings on it and I like them very much,)

thanks,

I can give you some info on the 286 Nosler Partition. I have shot several pigs with it in my 9,3x74R double.
Farthest shot @110 yards hit behind shoulder, closest shot @17 yards hit front of shoulder, exited behind off shoulder. Both shots gave complete penetration [as have all of them]. Both wounds showed signs of good expansion and tissue damage.
If there is a better allround bullet for the 9,3 I do not know what it is.
I have also used Woodleigh, Hawk, and several factory loads. The only bullet I have used that seemed to give more penetration is the 293gr. RWS TUG.

I use Lapua brass, it is of the highest quality and not expensive, as is RWS, but RWS is high priced stuff....

The 286 Nosler is a absolutely excellent bullet for about anything you wish to shoot with it, including Buffalo, the somewhat slow velocity of the 9.3x62 vastly improves most convention and premium bullets to perform excellently....North Fork makes some fantastic 9.3 bullets as does Woodleigh, I really like the 320 gr. Woodleigh in the 9.3 at 2400 plus FPS in my 26" barrel, and of course the monolithics work pretty well also....

I'll second Ray's vote for the Lapua brass. This stuff is great, and at $44/100 at Midsouth Shooters Supply you really can't beat it.

I have a CZ 550, but have only found the standard Leupold rings. You may want to try the Warne QD rings, they run about $75 a pair. I haven't been able to afford them for mine yet but there are a few guys here that have them on their guns and they seem to like them quite a bit.

I haven't used the Partition, but I am currently using the 250gr Ballistic Tips. They seem quite accurate in my rifle. I'll be trying them out on some Wisconsin whitetails this weekend when the season opens.

Hope this helps.

i have very limited experience with the 9.3 but i'll contribute my .02
1. i use graf brass. it is good stuff and the price is right.
2. don't know about 286 grn bullets. all i've used is 270 grn speers and this bullet killed my only animal with this gun(so far), a small(about 100 lbs) pig, very dead.
3. leupold doesn't make rings for the cz 550(as far as i know, i may be wrong). i ordered a set of warne medium QD rings. at the moment they are out of stock but should be here in about four weeks.

good luck....bud

I have the cz 550 lux with leupold 2-7 varix11 in warne fixed mounts. I use lapua brass as well, I also use the speer 270 gr bullets and have found them great on Grassy's and I expect they will be excellent on pigs. All speer 270 gr 9.3 bullets have exited on large grassy's after hitting bone.

I lke the Lapua loaded ammo as well as the brass. I have shot lots of game with my 9,3 and find the Partitions to do very well out of my R 93. A friend of mine went on a hunt with his 9,3 x 64mm and now exclusively uses the partitions in all of his 9,3 bores. I prefer the A2 dead tough for hunting heavier game but it looks like my general use load may well be the partition too. They just work. I have been thinking about adding another 9,3 to my collection. It will probably be a set of barrels for my double.

M. Starling--

It's all positives for both the rifle and its caliber for me. I'm installing a scope on the rifle this weekend to give a better assessment of its accuracy potential than my aging eyes and iron sights can give.

I'm using the CZ rings for this attachment. Some folks comment about how high these rings place the scope, and they are correct. The little I've seen and heard about the Warne set indicate that they are somewhat superior to the CZ set, but that's not a critical issue for me--the rifle was bought with iron sight usage in mind. My scope install is for accuracy assessment only, pretty esoteric I suppose.

I have been using Remington reformed/trimmed 35 Whelen brass up to now, and these 100 pieces will be getting the cast bullet duty after the scope test phase. The full potential loads will be getting put up in Lapua or Graf's brass. I like this rifle so much that 100 pieces of brass just isn't enough.

Folks,

just to add woodleigh now also make a 286 gr protected point bullet. I would like to muck around with that at some point and also like the looks of there heavy 320 gr, it would pentrate for sure I reckon. CZ rings work fine, I have a set on my cz .375 H&H I had them drilled and tapped for leupold torx head screws all over and that makes them better. There a good QD mount at a reasonable price, and there only a tad highre than warne mediums, does not make a difference to me only that warne vertical splits and talleys are more asthetically pleasing.

I'm using the Grafs brass, but just started with it. I wouldn't worry about using any bullet that says Nosler Partition on it. My understanding is that Hornady makes the Graf 9.3x62 brass.

Mike,

I've used the Norma brass quite a bit and been very happy. Just started with a box of Lapua - it was remarkably uniform with very little weight variance across all 100 pieces when initally inspected.

I'll cast another vote for the 286 grain Partition. Here's a llink with my experience with the bullet in Zimbabwe last year.

Recovered 9.3mm Partitions

As always ... thanks for the information.

(Phil,

Thanks for the pointer to the previous post. Darned if I hadn't missed that one. Nicely done.)
