It seems one can load a 338WM with 180 gr Accubonds and get velocity and accuracy of a 300 weatherby which is better than a 300WM..Wouldn't that be better than loading a 300WM with 180 Accubonds? Also be better for Africa.

I'd beg to differ on that.

The only value either of the cartridges have is in range. If the game is close they are just so much overkill....it's only long distances where these cartridges shine and the 180 in the .300 WM has sufficiently greater ballistic coefficient over the 180 in the .338 that it is superior in the thing we bought it for.....distance!

Well.....actually there is little reason for the .338 Mag in Africa as well....the .300 Win Mag will do the job handily and if one thinks he needs a .338 Mag as an insurance gun then he really needs a .375 H&H.

My plains game hunt was with a .300 H&H....and was more than needed.....next trip will be with a .30-06 if it's simply for plains game.

A 180 grain 338 has a much lower sectional desnity than a 180 grain 30 calibre. The contruction of the bullets is also likely to be different. Using the 180 grainer in the 338 is similr to using 150 grainers in 30 calibre.

The comparable 338 bullet to the 180 grain 30 calbre would be the 225 grain 338.

If you are going to shoot 180 grain bullets, use a 30 caliber.

Save the 338 for when you WANT to shoot bigger bullets.

The 338 is a versatile cartridge. Just buy one of each Wink

A 338 WM deserves a 250 gn boolet . . . and you shoot it when you really mean it.

I have a .300 Win, had 3 .300 Wbys; I have a .338 Win and a .340 Wby.

180gr .308 bullet is all you need, shoots as flat as a 130gr .270 @ 3000 fps. I've had 3 .300 Wbys and I can't justify the kick.

Now the .340 Wby is far and above better than the .338 Win, which I think kicks as hard as the .340 Wby and both the same as the .300 Wby.

That's why I hunt with the .300 Win and .340 Wby.

I LOVE my 338 winnie, but I'd never feed her anything less than 210 gr.

If the 270 won't do it the .338 will, if the 338 won't I can't afford the hunt!
