Give me a break on this fellas!
Just bought a new,and expensive front rest for my bench shooting. This one has the better windage and elevation adjustments..

But I can't figure out the nylon roller thing that is located to the side where the rifle's forearm rests.

I've seen it in pics where heavy benchrest rifles are used.

What's it purpose?

Are you talking about the stop?

Some of the nicer BRs have stops so you get the same placement every shot.

Consistency, Consistency,.....

Good Luck

Without seeing it I agree with Reloader. It sounds like the stop. It sits out in front. On a nice heavy low recoil BR rifle it allows the shooter to quickly push the rifle back to "battery". The forearm contacting the stop. That way the rifle is as close to exactly the same point as possible for the next shot. Speeds things up when you are trying to catch the same conditions.

On a heavy recoiling hunting rifle I found it more a pain in the a$$ so I take it off for most shooting.

As usual just my $.02

Yep,
It must be a "stop". But since I will be using this rest for some very heavy recoiling rifles, it is probably gonna come off.
Thanks gentlemen!

Hello the campfire:
Along those same lines, we bought one of the lead sleds thinking it would help in the load development and sighting that my son and I do. I find that it is hard to get repeatable shots off the sled. Is it just me? I have a hard time properly cheeking the stock when the rifle is in the butt rest, My arms are not particularly shot, but I have a hard time with a decent scope picture. My most acccurate rifle does not seem to shoot nearly as well. Am I just a dumb bunny or are other shooters having the same problem, or is this just a wast of money. I wanted to be able to shoot my heaver recoiling rifles more since my heart surgery, but not at the expense of blowing up my groups,

Is it safe to let for a 58 year old man run around in the woods unsupervised with a high powered rifle?

Judge--never had much luck with any kind of rest that restrained the rifle during recoil. Have always had my best luck with a leather bag front on a three-legged rest from Midway, and a bunny ear rear bag. I shoot everything up to .30-06 nearly free recoil and always take the slings off during shooting for groups. Only one I have had real problems with was a Marlin 336 in .45-70 shooting 300 gr Barnes at about 2200 fps. Broke my bridge and had to go to the dentist.

JudgeSharpe, I was of the same mind as you when I bought my Lead Sled and have had the same experience as you. I have found that I get the best groups off of sandbags front and rear but I have a tri-legged front rest and may get the bunny ear rest for the rear and try that like Dustoffer said. The only rifle I will continue to shoot off the Lead Sled is my 338RUM. I don't mind shooting it off hand but while leaning over a shooting bench that thing makes me say my prayers backwards!

Anyone tried the case-gard recoil reducing rifle rest?
I liked the look of it and made up something similar at the butt with some arrester cords going over the front of the bench with a 2 Litre bottle of water each side.

The little 458 WM jumped up and headed off the bags to the right. Got such a fright I dismantled the contraption never to be used again.
