I just finished reading Pierre Van der Walt’s African Medium Game Cartridges.

At page 93 as introduction to the 277/7.03 caliber bullets he focuses on the muse for the 270 Winchester.

He identifies the not well known, but known 6.8x57 Chinese Masuer (named on the groove and case length) for the Chinese Government as a potential muse. Mr Walt infers Winchester engineers were aware of this cartridge.

However, he goes one better identifying a second cartridge the 6.8x60 Chinese Masuer DWM list number 511C.

Mr. Walt concludes these two cartridges were more than likely known to Winchester and are the muse for selection of the .277 caliber bullet.

I had read about the 6.8x57, but this is the first time I have read of the 6.8x60 Mauser. This to me seems to be the 7x64 Bernneke to 280 Remington to my mind.

I will note in reading Alexander Rose’s American Rifle I became convinced Winchester found the 277 caliber bullet because Winchester did a lot of work on the .276 Pederson. However, I have been told that the 276 Pederson used .284 diameter/caliber bullets. I cannot confirm nor deny having never seen one in person to measure.

I love all these 7mm/270 threads. I fell like I have switched genders as I have begun to love these 7mm-7.21mm based cartridges. I am not going to be allowed at Thanksgiving Diner.

Hate is not born in a person. It is learned. I am thankful to have grown, evolved, and explored to allow myself to love.

308 multiplied by .9 gives you 277.2. I'm sure the Winchester boys used an abacus to figure that out.

I went through a phase of interest in the .276 Pederson, to the extent of having rifles made for the cartridge based on the Springfield Armory M1A and Remington 40X actions. It is definitely a 7mm/.284" cartridge. I have several boxes of original .276 military ammunition to prove it, along with the dimensional drawing of the cartridge included in Hatcher's Notebook.

I, too, have wondered if Winchester might not have experimented with the 6.8X57 round with a contract to supply military ammunition to the Chinese government in mind.

Xausa: Thank you for that solid info.

I judge st killed coyote and a whitle buck with “my wife’s” 270 Winchester FN South Carolina FN Supergrade, 140 grain Accubonds, and older VX3 3x9x40.

Stay tuned for the full rebuttal to Mr. Elmer Keith, respectfully.
