Curious what you use in your 300 H&H’s . I usually just work up one load per gun and stick with it. For a custom short throated legend .300Wea I use 200 gr Nosler Partitions @2900fps.This wood stocked rifle will be used for North American mixed bag hunting along with African plains game. I am a velocity proponent of the bullet delivering a shock factor. This would steer me more towards the 180gr , the 200gr will be going 10% slower than the 180gr ? What are your favorite loads for the 300 H&H? Is there any difference in killing results with the 200gr vs the 180gr in the old H&H?

I use a 180 grain Nosler Accubond in my .300 H&H. It penetrates elk, which is the largest and toughest thing I intend to shoot with it, so I see no need of a heavier bullet. I drive them a fairly sedate 2960 fps (which is about what the original H&H loading generated), although I could push them well over 3,000 fps if I chose without any complaint from the rifle. My powder of choice is IMR 7828 SSC which has been great in this rifle, providing consistent velocities and 3/4" accuracy. As I say, I could bump my load up a couple of grains, but to what effect?

A few years ago a hunting partner was shooting 180 grain Partitions in his .300 Winchester. He shot a bull elk through the lungs at about 60 yards; when it didn't fall he shot it again in nearly the same place. It wandered a few yards off in a gully and was the devil to get out. From this experience he wondered if he should go to a 200 grain bullet. I pointed out that the 180's had both penetrated the bull's chest completely and left appropriate exit wounds. What more could he have expected of a 200 grainer? "Well, nothing, I guess."

Actually, he could have expected a little more drop at longer ranges, a little more recoil, and maybe a bit more penetration if he were shooting a cape buffalo.

I prefer 200 or 220 on the H&H. I find the accuracy is superior. Just my take.

If you like velocity, you might try the tipped TSX 168 grain; you can get 3100 fps with several powders (24" bbl.).

64 grains of IMR 4831 with the 168 grain AMAX. It’ll knock a hole in a deer.

I don’t hand load, but have two .300 H&H magnums. I’ve only shot Federal Premium 180gr Trophy bonded tip. They seem to work, but the box says 2880fps.

Like I said, seems to work, but a limited sample set.

I meant to be DSC Member...bad typing skills.

I have an old 300 H&H built on a P-14 action with a barrel from old Harry McGowen. It prefers 200 gr bullets and IMR 7828. 200 gr Speer and 200gr Partitions shoot to the same spot with the same load so I shoot the Speers at targets and smaller game like deer and I shoot the Noslers at moose and elk. I like a hole going out the other side. Thats the one that lets most of the blood out.

I tried the 200 gr. Nosler in my 30-06 and my 300 H&H and never went back to the 180 gr. Nosler..both great bullets but the 200 gr. is just better anyway you cut it IMO..

So will a 200gn or 220gn slug over 5744. A true .300H&H 'deer load.'

You can drive a 200 gr. bullet at the same velocity as a 180, so why not?
